On the ES350, there is a light switch on left steering wheel **** that goes from on/auto/off. what do u guys usually do? i notice if u leave auto, the lights to analog clock turn on making it easier to read the clock in slightly dark, but not nightime situations. thanks.

I think you're referring to the Auto on for headlight switch. When the car senses that the headlights need to be on due to low light or nightfall, the headlights and some interior switches including the clock turn on. The dash may also dim a little (doesn't need to be bright at night), but this will depend upon your brightness setting next to your odometer reset button. I believe your amount of backlight to the clock is affected by this too.
