Fuel Reading
Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2013 ES 350 (CPO). I've run the fuel down to empty where distance computer indicates 4 miles left, yet when I fill up the thank it only takes 13.5 - 14 gallons. I have run the fuel down to E multiple times to see if it was an anomaly, but same result. I have yet to fill up more than 14 gallons, yet the specs indicate 17 gallon tank. Has anyone had similar issue?

Welcome to a Japanese car! (and the forum) There are a few threads related to your observation. My wife's CR-V is the same, too.

So the car has 3 gallons of reserve fuel and can go another 60 miles when it indicates 4 miles to zero? My Mazda CX-9 is pretty accurate. When the dash indicates 10 miles left, i fill up close to 18 gallons on a 18.5 gallon tank. I've called the dealership and waiting for a response.

I look at it as a benefit not a negative. I never go below 1/4 tank anyway...Story from when I was a teenager is that sediment lays on the bottom of your tank and could be pumped into the fuel line if you go to actual empty.

Your fuel pump is probably at the bottom of the tank and gets cooled by the fuel and easier to prime. Best to have a few gallons as reserve for those reasons.

You can get about 60 or more miles once the indicator hits 0, however as Arty pointed out, its good to always keep about 3 gallons of fuel in the tank for a handful of reasons. With mine being a hybrid, this is particularly so. If ran my tank too low it can severely damage my vehicle. I for one make it a rule of thumb to fuel up when i have 50 miles left on the indicator or right when the light goes on.

This is how I feel too. I'd rather have reserve in the tank, then actually run out of gas when the indicator gets to zero. I've always owned toyotas, so I've never really thought twice about the car NOT doing this. Always happy to know there is still a bit in the tank when the yellow light comes on.

Like Dave says, you'll need reserve for the hybrid least you'll need to have the dealer jump start your car and maybe some damage if the traction battery gets too low.
