30k mile service - doing all the filters myself?
This is very difficult for me because I'm used to going to forums where almost everyone does DIY work to save money. The general Lexus owner base does NOT do a lot of DIY maintenance. I come from doing a lot of DIY on an old Jeep Wrangler (which is btw, an excellent vehicle to work on due to simplicity and parts cost).
Anyway, the 30k mile service calls for several items, including a cabin air filter change and engine air filter change. These are easy DIY stuff. Then I'll get the oil change and brake fluid change done at the Toyota dealer. The Lexus dealership wanted way over $300 for the 30k service, which is nothing but highway robbery. The cabin air filter takes 5 min to change, and engine air filter 10 min to change.
I wanted to ask where people buy their cabin air filter and engine air filters from? Advance auto parts? I'm used to Advance Auto Parts and Autozone for parts for my Jeep. I'm not so familiar with Lexus parts and wanted to ask on here. There is no way I'm having Lexus do the simplest work for a ton of money.

I do the filter changes myself, including oil. I use Fram for the oil, air, and cabin filters. You are correct in that it takes just a few minutes for the cabin and a little more for the air. A lot of members don't wish to get oil on their face under a car and I definitely understand that. I like working on a car so it doesn't bother me. I buy all filters at Walmart and Mobil 1 synthetic @ 5 quarts for $25.17. My dealer wanted over $50.00 to change the cabin, I got one for about $12.00...
Correction: The Fram cabin filter is around $18.00 (10285)

I get all my filters for all my cars from either AAP or Amazon.
Bob, you're right. I don't do the oil/filter anymore. I've done enough in my lifetime and don't like going under the car as I use to.

I get my filters directly from Toyota Motor co and have a local dealer deliver at list price. Which saves me a ton since I think MSRP for cabin filter is about $50 . But you'll need to have an account to order which is hard to get unless you have a shop/tax ID. But my oil filters (fram) I still buy from Amazon and I have bought engine/carbin filters for fraction of Toyota filters when using other brands.
Also I wouldn't change my brake fluid at 30k miles unless it's tested with a strip, I'm at 57k miles and still have original brake fluid. However I did upgrade my brake pads around 30k and bought akebono from Amazon at a fraction of AAP price

If you buy your filters from Napa or CarQuest, you are getting relabelled Wix manufactured filters. Wix makes *excellent* filters, so those are 2 of the better options you can use.
AAP isnt bad, but I would stick with the mid or high end filters of each brand (i.e. NOT the Fram "orange can of death", but try the ToughGuard or the Ultra).
I used to use Purolator PureOne oil filters until Bob Is The Oil Guy forums started showing some that had tears in them after very little use. Switched over to Fram Ultra oil filters on my G37
I think for our new Lexus Im just going to stick with Toyota everything for oil. The oil is supposed to be very good quality. The oil filters might be "meh" but I figure keep it all factory and no one can really complain about warranty coverage if something goes wrong.
I might stick with factory for air filter, havent looked to see how hefty the filter is (our 2003 TL had a 4" thick air filter, no problem paying Honda for that one because it lasted forever)
Cabin air I would just get what I can find, usually Fram from Walmart or something

Yesterday, I got an oil change and brake fluid done at the Toyota dealership. They inspected the tranny fluid for me and said it was "clean." (I'm used to changing transmission fluid at 30k).
Now time to replace the filters this weekend. The cabin looks easy. Any instructions on how to change the engine filter or is it self-explanatory? Does the manual have it? My 2001 Acura manual had instructions on how to change simple filters yourself in it.

I am not sure changing the engine air filter is in the manual but I've done it a few times and it is straight forward and relatively easy. Same for the in-cabin air filter which is covered in the owner's manual just note the direction of air flow as well as the positioning of the old filter as you remove it.
There is something about the arrows on some of the in-cabin filters meaning "up" rather than the direction of the air flow.

Just finished it. Both filters took about 5 minutes. Yeah, the air flow for the cabin filter should be pointing downward, as air moves from the top of the hood into the car.
