Good idea - I've changed that to cousin now.

Alternatively, we could say that Camry and GS are all in the same TMC family.
Camry and GS are cousins.
While Camry and Avalon are non-identical twins, such that Camry and ES are brother/sisters?

But then treating Toyota and Lexus as distant relatives is not a bad idea either...

Untwisting a biological metaphor - the Camry-Avalon-ES share a platform. That platform was heavily modified for use in the Avalon-ES. The Avalon and ES are very similar mechanically.

I suspect, but don't know, that the ES has additional sound-deadening and re-tuned suspension rates. I would be curious to know if the steering components and dynamics were "adjusted" between the Avalon and the ES.

I suspect that you are correct. I have my 2 Lexus vehicles serviced at the local Toyota dealer, and I have often been given a Camry or an Avalon as a loaner. While both the Camry and the Avalon are very nice cars and both seem to be very well-built, it only takes a very brief amount of time driving either of the 2 Toyota vehicles before it becomes readily apparent that there are differences between both of them and my ES with regard to things like the amount of noise from the road, wind, and engine that enters the passenger cabin, ride quality, etc.

Additionally, I've read that there are several times more quality control checks on the ES production line than there are on the Toyota production line. While the Toyotas are, unquestionably, well-built, a careful comparison between a Camry or an Avalon and an ES reveals differences with regard to things like uniform gaps between body panels. I've also noticed that, with the ES, Lexus seems to do an excellent job of getting a virtually perfect color match between the body panels and the bumpers even though the bumpers are painted separately from the rest of the vehicle. On many of the Toyota vehicles, there is a noticeable difference between the color of the sheet metal and that of the bumpers, and this is especially true with harder to match colors, such as pearl whites. The color match between the sheet metal and the bumpers on the Toyotas isn't as bad as it is likely to be on, say, a Chevy or a Buick, but it isn't nearly as good as it is on an ES.

I'd think you'll see a new GS for 19MY and it'll be released in CY18.
