How a Steering Rack Works
I took apart two steering racks to see whats inside and how it works. The racks were for a 2016 Toyota Camry based vehicle, similar to the ES, and 2016 Chevy Cruze.
Check out my YouTube video here:
Here are a few photos.
This rack is for a 2016 Toyota Camry based vehicle:
Here's the rack tensioner:
The pinion gear pulled out of the housing:
The rack pulled out. This one does not have variable steering, the teeth are evenly spaced:
This steering rack is for a 2016 and up Chevrolet Cruze. Notice how it has an electric motor and computer attached to it as an assembly.
This is the steering position sensor on the input shaft.
The electric motor drives the rack via a belt gear system:
The motor has a computer on the back, and the unit is mounted to the housing:
On the motor side of the rack, the spiral gear has a bearing that's screwed into the housing:
And it uses a recirculating ball type mechanism to drive the rack. The pinion uses a straight gear from the steering shaft.
Here's the steering angle input sensor:
Enjoy!
