Another reason to use the fob deactivation feature (hold lock and then press unlock twice/watch for the light to flash 4X's)
is to enable you to lock the fob inside the car. If you are planning an activity that is not "key friendly" such as swimming,
jogging, kayaking and wish to take only the waterproof, lightweight and not $300 mechanical key...slip the key out, lock
the car by pressing the inner door lock switch and hide the deactivated fob under a floor mat. When you return you just
unlock the drivers door, press any button on the fob to wake it up and off you go! The reason to lock using the door switch
is if you lock using the fob before deactivating it you will have set the alarm...when you reenter the car using the mechanical
key the alarm will go off.

If the answer is to put it under a towel on a chair near the swimming pool / ocean, then wouldn't it be easier to just have the whole key under the same towel on a chair?

Think of it as a knee joint (up where the mirror mounts to the windshield) and an ankle joint (right at the mirror or "foot"). 1) Bend the knee up towards the headliner as far as it will go. 2) Bend the ankle down while holding the "shin" up until you can easily see out the back window. You will probably have to hold the "knee" up while you bend the ankle because it wants to bend back down at the "knee". If you can figure that weird instruction out, good for you. As others have said, this has been a feature of rearview mirrors on most cars for decades now. It does a great job of moving that blind spot up and out of the way of your normal view out the windshield.

nuraman00, if the whole fob was discovered the unscrupulous could just trigger the horn to find the car (didn't you watch Bourne Supremacy?)
and loot your stuff. Finding just the lone mechanical key would take considerably longer and hopefully they would not bother.

Only took me a year and a half to find this one. Parking sensors go off for instance at bank drive up. You could turn the parking sensor button off but have to remember to turn it back on. When the parking sensors are alarming on the nav screen lower right is a icon that if you take your cursor to and select it mutes the sound temporarily and will work again without doing anything.

I found 2 more features I didn't know about.
1. Remote start, If you press lock on the fob twice, then press and hold for a few seconds, the hazards will blink a couple times, then the engine will start remotely.
2. You can rearrange the order that the mode switch on the steering wheel cycles through audio sources by pressing the Audio button twice to get to the source screen, select Audio Source Select and select the source you want to move up or down in the list (pg 286 in the owners manual).

My understanding is this only works if you pay for the subscription.

That depends on the model year of your ES.
If you have a 2013 ES with the remote start option, it will work with the key fob without any subscription. If you have a 2014 ES (or, I think, a 2015 ES) with the RS+ option, key fob remote start will work without a subscription, but remote start via a smart phone app requires a subscription.
When remote start became a standard feature on the ES with (I think) the 2016 model year, starting the car with either the key fob or the smart phone app requires a paid subscription.

Did you buy new? I don't know about Canada, but in the states, they have to add a sticker under the hood that shows it has a remote start option.
