Even though the powertrain is similar, The exterior and interior design of the ES is much better than the Avalon. The ES is more luxurious and more refined. Both cars are good cars but it is the little things that make the difference. So it is up to you, if you care more about the function of the car and not much about the luxury, look and refinement then get the Avalon, otherwise get the Lexus.
I forgot the price. maybe the Avalon is couple thousand Dollar cheaper, but for me this is not big enough to make me choose the Avalon.

2014 Avalon has horribly hard front seats and a horribly hard ride, but secure, confidence inspiring high speed handling. The 2014 ES350 has softer ride and suspension and so is a much more pleasant vehicle. 2016 on up Avalons have somewhat softer seats and a much softer ride so the difference between the 2016 on up Avalon and ES350 is less dramatic.

Yeah I've heard when the current gen Avalon came out, people *****ed about the hard ride. Wasn't sure what year they fixed that.

Main thing that would deter me from buying a current gen Avalon is the dash design. Its a horrid mess of weird angles, bad cut lines, mismatched finishes, its a damn busy mess and a bad design IMO. Not saying it isn't well made though, gaps are pretty on point. Same thing could be said about the previous 3rd gen Avalaon, although that car it was more dissapointing materials, all that stupid cheap silver boom box plastic everywhere. Last Avalon that had a really nice dash design was the 2nd gen model, plastics were nice, it had a really nice layout and symmetry to it.
