The default setting for the trunk lock is that the trunk lock is linked to the door locks. If the doors are unlocked, the trunk (just like doors) can be opened without proximity to the fob, but, if the doors are locked, the trunk can only be opened when there is proximity to the fob.
According to the information on page 543 of the 2017 ES manual, the trunk locking behavior can be changed by the dealer as one of the "dealer only" custom settings.
Also, per page 104 of the manual, you can disable the trunk open button on the trunk, the trunk button inside the car, and the trunk button on the fob with the switch that is inside the glove box.
