My 2017 UL ES has the illuminated door sills, but, in the US, that option only includes the 2 front door sills. I notice that your rear door sills are also illuminated. Did it come that way or did you add aftermarket illuminated sills to the rear doors?

Also, in the US, the projector logos are only available as an aftermarket add on.

Both my front and rear door sills came illuminated. I actually need to check if the rear doors also have the logo projectors, I don’t recall now if they also have it.

Wow, I've never seen that feature before. That is cool.

How did you know, from the picture, that the rear door sills were also illuminated? I thought the picture was of the front door.

Interesting. I called both Lexus and dealers, and asked if there was any way to get all of the door sills illuminated. The response I kept getting (from my multiple calls) was that the rear doors were of a different size, and thus the illuminated door sills wouldn't fit on the rear doors.

I didn't. I mistakenly thought that the picture was one of a rear door.

There are aftermarket illuminated door sills available for the rear doors for the ES. My understanding from reading posts from people who have added them, though, is that installing them requires doing some wiring, and they are not plug-and-play, like the illuminated door sills are for the front doors.

I was considering one of the aftermarket ones (it came with 2 for the front door, 2 for the rear door). There was only one review, and it wasn't detailed. The person just said he loved them on all of his doors.

I had asked the seller if they would work on the rear doors as is. The seller said he's never had anyone say they didn't work, but recommended that I check with an installer first.

From one of the parts specialists at a dealer, he said the wiring was there.

But I just didn't trust whether they would easily work, and this didn't sound like it would be easy to return if it didn't work. The seller advised me to check with an installer before ordering.

I had wanted the door sills for both the front and rear, so all of the door sills were uniform in having the door sills. But it seemed like too much trouble, for the rear ones. Especially if it would be difficult to return.

After all of that inquiring, I had then called my sales manager and he was able to add the illuminated door sills to my order (as well as the glass break sensor). It hadn't been too late to add them.

So then I was just content with getting the factory installed ones, and not trying to get rear ones anymore.

Maybe if I saw a dealer with rear ones in stock at a shop, then I'd consider it again.

It is all about the fact that Germans buy primarily German luxury cars.
Lexus has the reputation of being an expensive, glorified Toyota (they also have very bad resale value in Germany) and therefore very few people buy them.

If someone asked you whether Lexus, and your ES in particular, was an expensive, glorified Toyota, how would you respond? What are some things you would point out?

Well, my initial reply with be “Is the Porsche Cayenne GTS a glorified VW Touareg?”.
In a more differentiated manner I can note the following:
- interior materials are of much higher quality
- seat comfort and leather are much better
- ride comfort in terms of suspension is much better
- cabin noise is next to zero vs the much noisier Toyota
- chassis fit and finish is “dead”, no creaks etc.

Since we've had a discussion about climate settings, I'll ask another question here.

Why are there two Auto buttons?

I believe you are referring to the Auto for the temperature and the Auto for the inside/outside air.

I don't know too much about the chasis fit. Can you explain what this means?

It's been a few years since I've driven a Camry. So the Camry drives rougher, and the handling is bumpier?

I'm looking at pics of the 2018 Camry, and some of the styling looks similar to what's in the Lexus ES350. Some of the stitching, and layout, etc.

I was also surprised that the V6 Camry had 301 hp. I thought it would be closer to the 2004 Corolla's 130 hp.

The 2018 Camry V6 uses the same 3.5 Liter V6 and 8 speed transmission that will be used in the 2019 ES.

Thanks.

After reading this, and testing the Auto buttons, here's what I see:

Top Auto Button: Toggles between AC on with the temperature seemingly changing to 75 and the adjusting the fan speed; to AC Off.

Bottom Auto Button: Toggles between air from outside comes in; AC ON; and air from within the car circulates.

Does this sound right?

Yes, the top one on means the HVAC will try to adjust the fan, outlets used and temp to what you have set for the temp. If off, the system is in manual mode, you set temp, fan speed and where the air is coming from.

The bottom Auto when on will let the car choose recirculating or outside air. Also also senses certain pollution like a diesel truck and select recirculating until the outside air clears.
