Default Digital Speedometer

I wish my 2017 UL ES350 had a digital speedometer in the dash between the gauges. I have scrolled thru all the options and can't find one. My common company car, Chevy Malibu, has one and now my sons new Camry has one. Frustrating.

Yes it is frustrating. With all the attention on distracted driving these days, it would make sense to have one. Same applies to the crappy navigation. I have dispensed with both and have a Garmin on the windshield with much easier to follow navigation and current speed and posted speed limit showing.

For the the price of these cars and the plethora of little extra features you would think they would get these basics right.

While im at it, the lack of a heater fan **** is frustrating too. Trying to adjust the fan while driving requires a driver to look at the panel to find the fan button, then look at the display to see what speed the fan is set to. Obviously while doing this the eyes are off the road too long.

Im sure Lexus spends way more time and effort on the design of the front grille than testing with owners what they like and don’t like, particularly safety related items.

Please explain how you can equate an analog speedo to distracted driving.

The analog speedometer is not the easiest to read. The digital is easier and (should be) right in front of your face. I am spoiled by the heads up on my Vette.

If you want digital read out, use the navigation. It has has setting where it will display Speed, RPM and something else in the media screen. Someone, Correct me if i am wrong, i remember seeing it somewhere.

Head-up Google Enables and GPS Enabled HUD application are designed to maintain a direct line of sight between a driver and the road

yes it does, in smallish characters. Requires driver to take eyes off road to look at the nav and find/read the info.

Focusing on the HUD display will also cause you to briefly divert focus from the road. Maybe a talking speedometer would be better?

You must really hate the clock!

I agree.

I think it may be a generational thing. Back in the 1980s, manufacturers started using digital readout speedometers on many of their cars, and this was especially true for sportier models. When they did so, there was a large outcry from many who said "just give me a big round easy-to-read" dial, and, within a few years, manufacturers, for the most part, abandoned use of the digital speedometers. I suspect that most who are clamoring for digital speedometers now are toward the younger end of the car buying age spectrum and who have been conditioned to believe that, if it is digital, it must be better.

The only place where I could see a need or advantage for a digital speedometer would be for use with a head's up display.

If a digital readout would be available, it could be like I had in a 2016 Avalon. And it was not accurate. If you compared the digital readout to the analog gauge and the cruise readout all three were different. I personally prefer the analog.

Mike728, I do not understand your observation. Heads Up Display was patterned after the aircraft
system to allow you to see the view ahead AND the readout. No glancing down at the Instrument
Panel, farther from your eyes than the IP to reduce focus change.
By the way, this is the ES forum and ES's do not currently offer HUD.

I understand both sides. It really isn't necessary to have the digital. But the middle scroll display screen has some useless stuff there, a digital output of speed shouldn't be too hard to program into it. Could it? Also think a HUD is more of a wow factor than anything really neccessary

I've looked without any success for the digital speed option on the Nav screen. Any more info to help me find out how to display that?

It’s there somewhere, need to go through the non intuitive setup or nav options screen/menu or something like that. In any event It’s far too small to be useable.

may have to go to the Nav manual to find it.
