Default Keep an eye on the water pump? 102k miles

I come from a long line of Honda/Acura cars where they all require the timing belt and the water pump to be replaced after 100k miles. (Water pump on Honda/Acura mainly due to the labor already done for the timing belt so go ahead and replace that also).

Any preventive maintenance done for Toyota/Lexus water pumps like Honda/Acura? How long have Lexus ES water pumps lasted in previous generations? My 2013 has 102k miles on it.

I came from a generation of Toyotas (first one was a 1968 Corona), and have not seen particular problems with water pumps. We changed them around 100K miles as well with the models which had timing belts. The older models has water pumps driven by the fan belt as those engines had timing gears. Changed those around 100K as well because in those days the impellers rusted out.

I'd say wait until you see evidence of it leaking or the car having temperature problems. No idea what the longevity of the pump in the V6 is but my old 2003 I-4 still had the original pump at 280,000 km and no temperature problems when I gave it to my daughter earlier this year.

Recommendation to change the water pump with the timing belt is common, due to the fact that timing belts have a limited life span, and the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and easily accessible “while you’re in there”.

ES 350 has a timing chain, so no scheduled maintenance to replace the chain. In fact I have no idea how the water pump is driven. So IDK how the water pump is driven.

My my conclusion is run the water pump till it fails. Others may have more insight.

Timing belt vehicles always change the water pump at the same time due to access. The water pump is "behind" the belt and it makes sense to do it for hardly no extra cost in labor. On all of my non timing belt vehicles I only change the water pump when symptoms arise (overheating, leaking etc).

On my ES I will change it when it goes out. Most will last 150 - 200k miles.

Apparently newer Audi water pumps have plastic impellers which fail prematurely. No idea what is the material of construction of the Lexus impellers.

I heard about this also. Didn't Audi go back to all metal parts.

Must be tough being an engineer these days when the administration tells you to "cost cut" when designing things.

Just watch for leaks, usually mechanic will notice, though these cars need very little maintenance - repairs outside of regular fluid changes.
Just happened to run across this, so that might be a clue if you start hearing this:

Seems it can vary on life from 60k-200k mileage.

I would run the water pump until it fails. That being said, my wifes' 08 RX350 wafer pump was replaced at 97.5K miles and I could hear a slight rattling noise when backing up into the garage, took it to the my mechanic and he instantly said water pump. He also replaced the serpertine belt while he was replacing the pump.

In a similar vein, fresh coolant, radiator cap, thermostat and cracked hoses are things that are simple maintenance items often overlooked but so important. A water pump is a repair item vs being a maintenance item.

Have a 2014 Honda Accord going on 132k+ miles ... original water pump ... it's a 4 cyl, so timing chain. Replaced the coolant at 120k.

Lexus ES350 only has 10k on it, so a little while away from a coolant change.

I use this in all of my vehicles. It helps with overheating and treats the metal components.
