Oh its definitely higher, but the potential for repairs is so much greater. A warranty on mine until about 120k miles is about $4,800. But, I have the air suspension which is $1,500 per strut, and is a common failure point, control arms OEM is a $3-4k job. Brake actuator which has already been replaced on mine once at 35k miles is $4k, power door closers are $900 each and they can go bad.

If you think about the ES, really whats the worst thing that could possibly go wrong? An engine or transmission failure which is extremely extremely unlikely. If I told you I had to replace the control arms and two air struts at 100k that wouldnt seem strange, and that would be $8k of work.

Some really good points. The LS has been equipped with pricey to repair extras for many years. My 2016ES has the safety suite and I feel that a 2013 ES doesn't. The safety suite is crucial to me and likely expensive to repair. But I still lean towards no extended warranty. The CPO status covers me until 2022. Then its a 6 year old car with pricey tech. I'll probably get another CPO at that point. I'm seriously thinking that the long years of long time reliability are changing because of the electronics.

As I age, I'm finding that safety extras are more important that before. It broke my heart to sell my LS, but couldn't fit it in my garage and street parking is too risky for my taste.

If you look back through older cars with those safety features though, I don't think I have EVER heard of a failure. Lexus has had radar cruise/PCS since 2005 in the LS, and if you read through the LS430 forums I don't think there are any instances of failures. I dont think Ive read about failures of the older laser systems they had back to 2001 either. No failures of parking sensors or automatic wiper sensors or anything like that.

The electronic safety systems are all electronic, and Toyota and the Japanese have making reliable long lasting electronics down pat. I wouldn't be worried about it.

Thanks for sharing your observation. I know you've been on this forum for quite some time and I can't recall any repots of failure either. As long as we keep collision insurance active, we're covered. Your contributions have been valuable to me and others over the years. Thanks.

There are some 2013 ES that have the safety system, but I do not believe they called it that. My 2013 ES300h UL has it with one exception, they claim the car will brake to lessen the an impact, not actually prevent it. Thank God I have not had to test it.

At the beginning of the Generation 6 ES model year run, virtually all of the safety features were options. From 2013-2015, many ES vehicles had extra cost options like the blind spot monitor and parking assist. Things like the collision mitigation system and radar cruise control were also available options, but they typically were only on Ultra Luxury package cars. For the 2016 model year, all of the safety features became much more common on ES cars, but they were still options. For the 2017 and 2018 model years, the Safety System + became standard equipment on all ES. Some, such as the blind spot monitor, were still options, but they were on most ES cars above the Base ES.

Correct. I special ordered my 2013 ES300h UL with every option except remote start and glass breakage monitor. I waited 3 to 4 months for it, it seemed like an eternity. But was worth every minute. I even tracked the ship from Japan as it traveled to the port in Florida.
I lucked out with my wife's 2015 ES350 UL, it was on the dealer's lot.
