Default ES 6th gen vs IS 3rd gen reliability.

Hello All,

I'm in the market for a new car. I'll test drive both of these to see which one I like better, but I wanted to ask your experience on reliability.

I have a Camry right now and it has almost 200,000 mi and it really hasn't given me any problems. I've really done the bare minimum in terms of maintenance (brakes, tires, oil change), and it's still extremely reliable.

Do you think the 6th generation ES and/or 3rd generation IS provide can provide similar reliability to my Camry?

Had a 2013 ES and currently a 2017 and never had the first problem with either. Don't think you can go really with either. J D Power as shown ranks the ES as the most reliable compact premium car. It has consistently been the top in this category. You can see the IS is third. Lexus overall in the 2020 J D Power Dependability Study came in #2 after being #1 for eight years in a row.

You would need a lot of data and analysis to figure that out. Surf the relative forums and you’ll get a lot of opinions/experiences. Some common topics will become apparent, but they are few.

Bottom line Lexus is at the top, or near the top of the list(s) for reliability. Along with Toyota.

Find the Lexus car/model you like, or a Toyota, and do the due diligence.

and spend more time with your friends and family. It’s only a car.

Both are super reliable, but the IS will go through tires and brakes at a much faster rate than the ES.

Can't speak to the reliability of the IS.... never owned one, but I have a 2013 ES.. bought it new in Jan. of 2014... 6 years ago and not one mechanical issue.. also had a 2007 Avalon ( same engine as is in the ES )... Drove it for 8 years.. no problems there either... Very reliable..

I would say the ES is probably the most reliable, cheapest to maintain Lexus you can buy.

Good point and interesting that you said that. The day I bought my ES, I can remember the new car sales manager telling me he thought the ES was the best bang for your buck vehicle in the Lexus line up.
