Default 2015 es350 New brakes and rotors cost with labor

I haven't used my car in past few weeks, today in morning I was hearing some metal noise when driving slowly without applying the breaks. Took to the mechanic and said can use new brakes and rotors (even though a month ago he said can wait until next oil change- never replaced brakes yet and car has 42k miles).

He charged me with labor $580 for all 4 brakes with rotors -non oem brand. I know it's a little too late but I'm wondering (and for next time) if I would've saved by buying them separately and just paying for labor. I saw on ebay for example a whole set for about $100, and labor wouldn't probably be much extra- but I don't know anything about the quality:

thanks!

Just to clarify you paid $580 for parts+labor to replace all 4 rotors and pads? It doesn't sound that bad to me. Would you save money by buying off Ebay? Probably, but you would forego virtually any warranty you would have on those parts and I suspect the labor charge would be at least $300 for a set of 4 (assuming a very cheap labor rate). That said, 42k miles seems pretty early to be replacing the brakes on an ES, but given the age that might be normal. I've got 60k on my 2017 and still have at least 50% of brake life left.

You paid a fair price, and as mentioned have a warranty. My friend would install supplied parts for customers at his service station, but shops do not like customer to supply parts, and definitely won't warranty it.
I do know someone that purchased rotors and pads from manufacturer listed in ebay link. His were for Hyundai and slotted. Not the best quality, and 2 had to be replaced right out of the box due to corrosion. Brakes are important, don't look for cheap off brand parts.
As far as mileage for rotors and pads, my wife's old landlord could wear out a set in under 20,000 miles. She was a nervous driver and drove with one foot on the gas and one on the brakes.

If you can even find a mechanic willing to do it. Most will tell you to pound sand if you bring your own parts, because they have no way of ensuring a quality part through a legit supply chain (what if yours is a knockoff? They do exist). And they know that if that unknown-quality part fails in the next couple of years, you'll most likely be angrily confronting them and expecting them to re-do the work for free.

Not a bad price. $500 is about what I pay for that job. Toyota and especially Lexus would have been a lot more expensive.

but it seems you can buy non oem brakes + rotors for about $100 and change, while labor should take about an hour and shouldnt cost more than $100, unless i'm missing something here...
But I'm assuming about $500 is the price going direct through the mechanic

What's missing is a quality comparison between OEM and non-OEM. Not to say that non-OEM is lower quality. Not necessarily, and sometimes it's higher. But you need to figure that out before buying.

Been a couple of months at least since I checked, but the last time I asked my mechanic how much for a complete brake job he said you could figure about a hundred bucks a wheel. But then again, he's a personal friend, actually owns a body shop but does mechanical work also... been doing business with him since the late 80's...
