Default Driver's cup holder mechanism

That nice cup holder on the driver's side broke a few days ago, when a large cup popped the "spring-gripping" mechanism out (into the armrest area). I'm able to access the mechanism through the hole (also can remove it through the hole), but I can't quite get it back into place. Any tips?

just keep it open, that looks to be too much of a hassle to get it fixed

Yes, but regardless, I'd like to keep the "features" of the car in original condition. Repair ideas?
