Engine stops running driving down the road
I was driving my 2018 Lexus ES 350 the other day and the engine stopped. I was traveling around 50mph. After 10 seconds or so the engine restarted and I continued to travel on my way home. The car has 9,700 miles on the Odometer. This is the first time that has happened and I bought the car new.

Maybe you have a hybrid and do not know it. At least you save on gas with the engine shutting off. Truly if the engine shutoff on you wouldn’t you have lost items like AC, power steering, etc. since no belts are turning? Did you experience any of these things, or why do you think the engine shutoff?

I take it that you are trying to be funny. I don't have a hybrid and yes the engine shut off.

The car has been to the dealer. They tell me the computer's data tells them that the driver is pressing on the accelerator and the brake at the same time and that is what caused the engine to shut off. That is Ludicrous. There was a recall on this model year and make back in March for the same thing. According to the dealer my car is not in that recall.

ES 350 or GS 350? Just checking because your original post says "ES 350" and you posted in the 4th generation GS subforum.
Regardless, take it to the dealership as this is extremely dangerous not just for you, but others on the road as well.

The dealer is tells me that they are working on a buy back but because of the pandemic that is going around it is going to take some time. They will not fix the car because of what the computer data shows. There are other steps that I am about ready to take. I can't drive the car and it costs too much to sit in my garage and I am getting no use out of it.

First off, I was half joking about having a hybrid or not. Second, never heard of an engine shutting off, then turning itself back on without manually restarting it. Like in the old days when someone is trying to drive away from some monster like Jason, and they keep on turning the key to try and start. I guess with push button start, not so easy. Plus I would not think the engine would start in Drive. Only P and N. Sounds like this may be an issue after all, but as others have asked, this is a GS forum, and no one here has ever posted on this issue with our cars. Good luck.

The dealer is going to buy the car back, but couldn’t replicate the problem? Either that’s awfully nice of the dealer or they know something you don’t. Wasn’t there an issue with engine blocks cracking on some US built ES models?

There was a recall back in March of this this year on the 2018 ES 350 and certain Camrys' due to fuel pump problems. The cars could stall or shut off while driving. Lexus and the dealer tells me that my car is not part of that recall. Lexus corp is working through the dealer with the buyback.program. I am still pursuing this. The car can't be driven safely in this condition.

I am saying that the engine shut off, may I should have said that the engine stumbled to the point that it felt like it had shut off. I was looking for an exit to coast to when the engine caught and the car was able to be driven home without any further incident.
