[QUOTE=BMGS;10997527

I'm all for synthetic (I used to shell out for Group IV and V before I realized Mobil 1 is fine for 99% of situations) I'm just trying to take a logical approach to reconcile the information in the manual vs. what a dealer wants to sell.[/QUOTE]

BMGS... I get that, and yes, I know that sometimes things are presented by dealerships as things the manufacturer says to do and it's not always so. It's happened to me several times.. Had a service writer tell me once that I had to buy a Lexus / Toyota branded battery that would run me about 300 bucks. Told me any other battery wouldn't do the job. I'm no mechanic, but I'm not stupid either.. I pointed out to him I had a 4 year old interstate battery in in the car and the car worked just fine, One other time when I took it in for service they asked me if I wanted the rear differential serviced at a cost of around a hundred bucks or so. I said it's a front wheel drive car, no rear differential, and they said, oh, my mistake thought you had a hybrid. so your point is well taken, have to be aware of what they're selling you. oh btw, back to oil for a second, I've always used Mobil 1 EP oil, but every once in awhile I get the urge to try Royal Purple, but then when I see the price I figure never had a problem with Mobil 1, no reason to switch.

Hey don't knock the Lexus battery, my old 1992 SC300 had one in it when I bought it in 2012, had to have been 7-8 years old when I sold that car. Still fired up with one bump of the key, this after me having a fuel pump issue(had it replaced) where you'd sit and crank the car for 5+ seconds several times before it would fire. Had no idea it was $300 lol.
