Default Lexus Platinum Warranty - Markups Anyone?

I did some research on extending the warranty on my Lexus ES beyond the 4 year bumper to bumper. I’m still within the original 4 years and can purchase an extension anytime before my base warranty expires.

I had heard over the years that extended warranties have markups, which prompted me to explore pricing for this warranty across northern California. Below are the three different prices I was quoted for the same Lexus Platinum Warranty. This adds 4 years to the base 50k warranty and essentially doubles the miles and years. This warranty isn’t 100% a bumper to bumper, but is as close as it gets. Link with details from Lexus. 1

Lexus PLATINUM 8yr 100k,
Dealer Pricing By Area
Bay Area - East Bay $ 3,790
Sacramento $ 2,695
Central Valley $ 2,065

Now that’s quite the range for what is one and the same product sold by Lexus through dealers. Couple of thoughts for the community.
  1. Hopefully for those shopping for warranties, this is helpful information.
  2. Questions for the community:
    1. Is the final price a good one, I think it is, but please let me know.
    2. Is getting a warranty on a Lexus even worth buying?
    3. Any cheaper options?

Save your money. Do a search of posts and you'll see a waste of money... No extended warranty...

Especially like the the 6th Gen ES. You wont get $3790 in repairs over 4 years back.

If the 3 options are apples to apples LEXUS dealer warranty, suggest you get this:

Central Valley $ 2,065

For the price, you will definitely get your money's worth. Trust me. If for some reason you have a warranty claim, having this coverage will tilt it in your favor, less rejection for warranty claims. Did it for my 2004 RX330. I recovered the $2,500 I paid for it.

My 8 year LP warranty expires tomorrow. It was a waste of money, which is expected. I'm done buying them.

A solid money maker for the dealer. In total only 20% of extended warranties are ever used or honored. Source: Consumer Reports

Put far, far less than a Warranty taking care of the car and servicing it. My 2013 U/L went 149k. One minor leak from a sending unit. $150 fix. And 1 O2 sensor $59 I did myself, likely some flooding deep water I could not tell I went through.

My cost was only the Best Fluids, Filters and upper Intake cleaning, besides Brakes and Tires and spark plugs. Really no different that the others 5 Lexus I owned. At 149k my ES350 U/L looked new and ran better than New.

If you own 10 cars over 50 years... and pay $3000 each time for extended warranty , that’s $30,000. Doesn’t sound like an economical proposition. Yes, you might get hit with a $5,000 bill somewhere along the line, so the warranty might save you. But, you’re buying a car that’s at the top of the list in terms of reliability. Low probability you’ll get a large bill for repairs. Unless you didn’t do your due diligence, bought an abused broken down, and accident experienced vehicle.

There’s a risk for sure, but risk has two components , probability and consequence. By buying a Toyota/Lexus you’re reducing the probability of a major repair. Consequence may be high, like a $5000 transmission, but in the grand scheme of things the extended warranty scam is not worth it. If you can’t stomach a $5000 repair bill, maybe the warranty is worth it to you. But in most cases, as has been mentioned very few people ever claim on the extended warranty.

Call Midwest Lexus at 800-530-5789. They offer Lex Platinum extended warranties for very cheap. I will get mine from there when the time comes.

Why? What to you think will be a repair on the ES you will recoup the cost for?

If buying an extended repair warranty gives you peace of mind then I suggest you go ahead and purchase one. It is obviously not for everyone and, as you can see, many varying theories about worth. My idea would be to place an unspecified amount of money in an account or pickle jar each payday or each time you receive a check in the mail. After a short time you'll have funds available to pay for unexpected repairs - if there are any while you own your ride. If no repairs then you take a nice vacation with your significant other and blow the stash. No way would I be handing 2 or 3 thousand dollars to a dealer for an extended warranty that, IMO, will not be used. This thread is akin to the transmission oil change - yes or no. There is no correct answer for everyone.

if you drive the hell out of your car like lets say your driving 80-100k a year its worth it but only if you get soemthing with really high mile alowance on the warranty and you most likely wont find one
so unless the warranty is unlimited miles it not worth it and if all you drive is like 20-25k a year than its 100% not worth it
i pay for a plan because i drive 88-95k per year

I had an extended warranty on my 2007 RX. Feb 2006 build in Canada, and the repairs paid for the warranty 3x over. It is also piece of mind and it was worth it.

Midwest Lexus is the cheapest for a Lexus Platinum warranty. I don't trust the reliability of these infotainment systems, either.
