Default Keyfob protection

After years of owning Toyotas, I got my first Lexus. Not only that, its my first car with a smart key. I have heard thieves can use a tool to hack the car and steal it. I also heard you store the fob in a faraway bag (I think thats how you spell it) or disable the fob by holding the lock button then pressing the unlock button twice. Whats the best strategy? Any feedback would help!

It's a faraday bag and is useful to a point. However thieves can clone your fob by simply noting the VIN number. They now have the tools to do this. They then put an air tag on your vehicle to come find it after cloning. Hiding the VIN is a good solution but may not be possible on some models (I can't do it easily on my 2023). It also may contradict laws in your area. The next best thing would be to get a club to lock the steering wheel. Thieves can still bust the lock but that takes time.

For what it’s worth, I bought a couple of those Faraday pouches on Amazon for use when we travel and park in unsecured hotel and restaurant lots. For maybe ten bucks each or so, you get some, though admittedly incomplete, protection.

yeah, mines a ‘20 and there’s no way to cover the vin.

Better spend a few more bucks and stay at hotel with secured, indoor parking and restaurants with secured valet service. If you spend $50K on a car, it may be a necessity in the times wherein we live—-and even these measures are not totally safe.

Is this true for Lexus? A key fob has a unique identifier and the car needs to be programmed to that fob. I am sure you can get the metal key cut from the VIN, but not the actual remote.

I haven't heard of ES being stolen.

They like SUVs to ship them overseas.

Yet another good “incidental bonus reason” to own a Lexus ES! Adding it to my list, which includes regular gas and relatively affordable insurance premiums! Yeah!👏

Curious now…is the $25 Lexus Key Glove a faraday bag? If not, what purpose does it serve?

It is not. The purpose is to look goofy.

If it were a Faraday bag then you could not use the fob to open and close the car door without pushing the buttons. I would guess that it also might not start the car unless it is removed from the bag.

A Faraday bag will block the signal from the key.

The Lexus key pouch is meant to protect the key from scratches and wear.

I've had my key bag for 7 years now and it still looks good.

Your first question—-Answer is no.
Your second question —-None, other than to make money for Lexus!
