This is the future going forward except for expensive specialty vehicles. Tesla recently posted much larger profit per vehicle causing other companies to freak out and re evaluate. Build variations is one of the many things that erode profit margins so I expect consolidation of model lines going forward.

Odd footnote on that, BTW: Pretty much the only option not rolled into one of them was the A/C, which for a surprising number of years was a dealer-installed option that came to the dealer completely modular and just got dropped in so the dealer could make a profit on the new car sale.

Since Lexus kept my car for a week in '19 to collect diagnostics on the tranny issue to send back to corporate, I would ask my service tech every 5k miles when I was in for service if they had any updates for the ECU/TCU. The answer was always no through April of this year when I traded it in. That would be software. Hardware-wise I don't know.
