Default System shutdown

I am parked on the side of an interstate, awaiting a tow truck. When i accelerated to enter traffic, I got malfunction errors on virtually every system showing up on the display. Luckily I was able to get well off the highway, but does anybody know what might cause such a complete catastrophic failure?

It may be because of many reasons. One of them is the alternator.

Yes. I am at home and the car is at the Lexus dealership, awaiting a diagnostic. Thank you for asking.

Wow, I'm new to the Lexus ES350 family, so I would definitely be interested in hearing what caused that shutdown. I previously owned BMWs (4 in a row) and none ever left me stranded on the side of the road before...

Such failures, in my knowledge, are rare to Lexus. Did you buy yours pre-owned? Maybe check CarFax for a clue on if this unit has a history. Might also give you an idea where the problem is. I suppose every brand produces some units with a weakness for one problem or another.

My 2019 ES350 is certified/preowned and in warranty. As noted elsewhere on this thread, alternator failure is a frequent cause of multiple concurrent electrical systems shutting down. But I won’t know for sure until they do the diagnostic (in a couple more days). I will report back then.

How many miles on your 19 clock? Original battery?

Default System shutdown: Update

The diagnostic (including a couple of attached photos) showed that a piece of the air intake resonator broke off and was wedged in the throttle body. This probably explains why the system shutdown was preceded by the engine racing far beyond the gas I gave it to merge with freeway traffic. And when I tried once to restart the engine, it raced for a second or two, then died. $50 to replace the part.

WOW.
That's a great outcome, given the symptoms. Glad you found a relatively simple and inexpensive resolution

Good thing it didn't get past the throttle body into the intake runners and down into the valves. That would have been a mess to clean up. Would likely have jammed into a valve and then melted if the engine was at full temperature. Or worse, get into a cylinder.

The real question is - what the heck would have caused that to break? Did they charge you for the service?

I’m going to question the mechanic who’s working on it when I pick the car up tomorrow morning. They’re charging me $50
