Default How to program a new key

Hey all! I was wondering how to program a new key for a 7th Gen Lexus ES. I have the 2020 Premium package Lexus ES and am planning to buy a 3rd Key used off of eBay or the likes. I tried to search online but couldn't find the procedure to pair that extra key to the car. Would someone have any idea how to do so? Thank you in advance, and happy driving to you all!!

I had the local Toyota dealership do it. Cost a few bucks but I felt better doing it professionally. Wouldn’t want to get stuck somewhere using a key that didn’t function properly.

If you have Techstream, you can do it by yourself.

Do you have more information on this? I tried to pair a key on my 2022 and a passcode from Lexus was required to continue the key smart key process. I was unable to find any way around it, so ended up just getting the key programmed by the dealership.

I've read some people say they have issues with getting used keys programmed, so use caution there. I got mine from mylparts and the price was better than my local dealership. eBay shank cutting service worked great too. I think it was about $160 for a whole key, after everything.

I coded one key and no passcode was needed.

V12, Toyota Yaris 2008.

Do you get the pass-code when you press the button?

No, I don't remember exactly what that button did, but it wasn't helpful lol.

I think thats the point where the service tech would get the key by being logged into the Lexus server.

On a 2019+ ES or any of the newer Toyot and Lexus models you need a passkey from Lexus in order to program.

I bought a key off Ebay for my 2020 ESh and I could not program. I took it to the dealer and they could not either since it was a previously used key. Ther key must never have been used. The electronic key info stays inside Toyotas database and they do not allow for re-use.

With all these precautions, the thieves are still able to connect to the OBD2 port and start the car in 30 seconds.... Makes me wonder...

To fix security issues with previous immobilizer system key code addition/deletion procedures, Toyota changed newer version immobilizer systems to require a more cryptographically secure means of adding and removing key codes into a vehicle's immobilizer system. The revised system is used in this ES generation so adding key codes isn't as freely and easily done as in vehicles using the older Toyota/Scion/Lexus immobilizer systems.

The Techstream Smart Key Seed Number Help! thread thejon linked to above has more info on this. In my post #3 in that forum thread there's a link to a TSB which has the Techstream instruction steps one must follow to add (key) smart codes to this generation's ES immobilizer. (The TSB shows to obtain a passcode to add a key one must go through a password protected login step.)

There is no general public DIY method for programming a key fob/card into this generation of ES.

If you followed the Techstream Smart Key Seed Number Help! link in my preceding post, you would have seen that only those with key code access (i'e', Toyota/Lexus service departments and "current member of the NASTF Vehicle Security Professional Registry" locksmiths) can program a key fob/card into this generation of ES.

To add to that: and the honorary members of Ontario vehicle theft organizations. They can also program a new key in few seconds. 😀
