You have that problem too! Such a pain. TESLA owners can be so inconsiderate! We can commiserate. It's the only reason I moved on from my Lexus! Now, I can confine and release at will from the driver's seat, but that's for another forum!😜😜😜😜

I practiced at length in the manner depicted in the manual and as recommended by the salesman with maybe 10% success. Then someone here suggested a side to side horizontal swipe. Works every time.

The only time the kick sensor doesn't work for me is when I leave my foot under the car too long. In that case I get a double beep telling me that it decided not to open.

In short, there's warnings in the Owner's Manual that jam protection may not work just before the trunk lid closes and specifically warns to be careful to not catch fingers.

Long version, quoting from the all the various versions of the (US) Owner's Manual (page numbers vary but the text is the same):
⚠︎ WARNING
...
Trunk easy closer (vehicles with power trunk lid)

In the event that the trunk lid is left slightly open, the trunk easy closer will automatically close it to the fully closed position. It takes several seconds before the trunk easy closer begins to operate. Be careful not to catch fingers or anything else in the trunk lid, as this may cause bone fractures or other serious injuries.
...
Jam protection function (vehicles with power trunk lid)

Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause serious injury.

⚠︎ WARNING
...
● The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just before the trunk lid fully closes. Be careful not to catch fingers or anything else in the trunk lid.

I have a 2023 ES350 and for mine the kick sensor will open or close the trunk... Follow same steps for opening and closing...
