Bigger inside than the LS, cheaper than the GS/5-series/E-class/A6, knock it out of the ball park... They're not going to sell many LSes if the ES is 90% there.
I think in asking why the LS has less room, they didn't want an explanation as to how it has less room but rather the reasoning behind the decision to design it as such when viewing the Lexus sedan portfolio as a whole. Personally, I think this means they're going to shake things up a bit and we've got a bit more exciting offerings coming up as current model positions & missions in the lineup shift.
I suspect with the boom in SUV and fall in sedan sales - there is a move for sedans to target dynamics, because people who genuinely want space would already purchase an SUV.
The ES is a special Lexus sedan that does NOT target dynamics with its front drive architecture - hence the extra interior space.
Why cant Lexus take the LC styling and translate it into sedan form?
The ES has a crazy looking grille that doesn't mesh with rest of the car.
Atleast RX and NX the whole design is aggressive.

Nobody in their right mind shopping for those cars will buy an ES lol
It will sell well to entry level luxury shoppers.

The 5LS was the first attempt, but it didn't go too well.
The 7ES is the second attempt, and a more reasonable result.
I suspect the third and fourth reserved for 5GS & 4IS will go down much better...

This is an excellent explanation. I'd thank you if I could!!

Agreed. Being a GS buyer, I still wouldn't consider this 7ES despite thinking very highly of it based on initial impressions! It will likely fly off dealer lots regardless.
It's referred to as Global Architecture for Luxury Vehicles (GA-K for FWD models). My guess is to differentiate it enough so the Lexus models don't appear as merely reskinned Toyota's.

(Or maybe this is me hoping for a surprise 5GS Gran Coupe )
I dont think there really is a future for a traditional sedan type GS. I could see a Lexus future without a LS sedan. Or I could see more variations of the LS brand name such as a LS coupe or LS convertible.

Notice how the 7ES has "flattish" 2D-like looking door trims - without much depth & 3D like the ageing 6ES - this is probably a deliberate attempt to keep the FWD-based 7ES below the premium RWD-based models like LS/GS/IS...
