I have just purchased a 2019 Lexus ES350. I have paired it with my iPhone XS Max without any problems and I have successfully set it up to receive text messages. However, when I use Voice Commands to try and reply to an incoming text message, I am told that that this phone does not have that capability. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong as I cannot imagine that my Apple flagship iPhone does not have the capability of replying to text messages. Thank you in advance for responding.

You can if plugged in and Using Apple car play or if you say use siri . if just via blue tooth it can read incoming messages but cannot send . this is an Apple / car thing and exists with most car Mfgs.

ES63,
Thanks for responding. Yes, I knew that if I used Apple CarPlay with the phone plugged in via USB I could use Siri and respond to text messages. It just seemed really odd to me that when using the Lexus system and my iPhone was connected via Bluetooth that I could receive but not reply to incoming text messages. However, I now understand that due to some Apple issue I have to use Apple CarPlay for receiving and responding to text messages. Thank you for taking the time to clarify this for me.

Push and hold the voice command button to activate Siri. Then use Siri to dictate and send the text. Even when not using CarPlay.

Offroad200,
Many thanks for for the additional info. For some reason it never occurred to me that one could activate Siri via the Voice Command button when not using CarPlay to respond to an incoming text message. Does this work even when the iPhone is not connected via USB but is connected via Bluetooth?

I use Android and all I do is say "Phone" and then "Text "Name"" and it works perfectly.

Many thanks to all who replied. Everything is working great once I learned that I could access Siri with the Voice Command button even though I am not connected via USB and using CarPlay. I was able to easily receive text messages, have them read through the Lexus audio system, and reply all with Voice Control. Just perfect!

iOS 14 public beta has been released, has anyone attempted to use it with the new software?

I realize this is an old thread, but since there are some new owners/questions I might add my thoughts. I use Apple via Bluetooth and when I wish to send a text, I just push the “speak” button on the steering wheel and once the system beeps I just state “send text to ‘name from address book or specific phone number’”. Then just follow the voice prompts as she asks what you wish to say and if you are ready to send. This works well most of the time, but it can occasionally be fussy. It will sometimes ask to verify which contact and give you a choice to select - even when they don’t even sound similar. Go figure. But it works fine at least 90% of the time. YMMV
I imagine many just prefer to use the phone’s assistant since the phone is nearby. Stating “hey Siri/Google” and giving it similar commands is just as easy and may even be more accurate.
