My first tank of gas was 42.5 mpg

Coming from a 21mpg IS350, I am thrilled after owning the ES for a couple of weeks

I wouldn’t necessarily think something is wrong because you’re getting 41-42. What part of the country are you in? Altitude? Type of gas? Too many variables.

For reference, I’ve never ever been in sport mode. I’m usually at 60-65 mph since that’s the highway speed limit around me. We’ll see what the next few tanks yield.

I only go to Normal or Sport modes sometimes to pass or getting on the freeway. I am very light on the accelerator and keep my speed to about 70mph 90% of the time. I also have ECO A/C mode on. I've filled up 5 times since I got the car. The best was just under 42 mpg. The average for all 5 fill ups has been just under 41. The car usually displays about 1mpg better than what I actually get. I've never had the actual be better than the cars estimate even on the 2011 Camry hybrid I had for almost 9 years.

The EPA estimate for freeway is 45 mpg. I know that's usually high compared to real world but I was at least hoping for a solid 43 mpg.

Mileage isn't bad but certainly not meeting even low expectations.

I'm in northern California. The altitude is a few hundred feet above sea level at most. I use regular gas as specified in the owners manual. I buy Chevron gas. I typically drive about 70mph. I expect there would be some difference but your 47mpg is 15% better than what I'm averaging which is pretty significant.

45-47 mpg is remarkable for a sedan this size. I have a previous gen ES300h and I get 35-40 mpg on freeway runs. In town, with light throttle usage I can get 45 mpg but 50 mpg is almost impossible. I've seen a ridiculous 70 mpg before when using cruise control on speed restricted mountain roads but that's a real outlier.

It would be interesting to compare 6ES and 7ES hybrid mileage numbers to see how much of an improvement they've made.

If a good portion of your driving is highway driving around 70 mph, I would not expect that your mpg would be as good as it is for some of the others because, at 70 mph, the car is likely to be using the internal combustion engine almost exclusively

Memorial Day weekend I did LA To Palm Springs 46 MPG on the way to Palm Springs about 130 miles in Sport Mode. Coming Back using Cruise Control about 90 percent of the way, my combined MPG came in at 43. My last tank including the Palm Springs Trip and Around Town city driving was 43 MPG.

Around town I usually get about 35/36 MPG because my office is so close to home about 1.5 miles.

In the past 5 weeks, I have driven 3573 miles of which 90% of those were interstate driving at 70 mph. I hand calculate all my mileages (as I find the on-board calculations inaccurate by as much as 3 mpg sometimes) and have had a low of 42.79 mpg and a high of 49.78 mpg and an overall of 44.91 mpg. I drive in eco mode only with a light foot with air conditioning running all the time. I have noticed that driving 75 mph vs 70 mph seems to effect the overall mileage by approx. 3 mpg. Overall, I have been very happy with the mileage.....now if I only had android auto and sound from the rear speakers, I would really be happy.

Damn. What are you doing that I'm not doing? I also drive 90% on the freeway. I stay in Eco and set my cruise control to 72. I'm not hard or the acceleration and usually have the AC set at 72-74. Even my best is worse than your worst. Since I got the car on April 3rd I have out 6,000 miles on it and filled up 13 times.

My results:
Worst: 37.69
Best: 41.89
Average: 40.37

I'd be happy if my average was as good as your worst.

Tire air pressure can also make a ~10% difference in what your getting (MPG) if everything else is equal, and it sounds like it is.

There is also a big difference if you are driving in the rain and driving against a strong headwind, fortunately for me there was not much of that on what I was quoting.

I've read that tire pressure doesn't really have that big of an impact on MPG. Especially not if it's only a few PSI either way. I have my tire pressure set at 35psi when cold as stated in the owners manual.

I have been in both rain and nice weather and no real difference. I'm not sure about head winds but by MPG has been about the same since I got the car almost 4 months ago so if it is strong headwinds they are always present which I find unlikely.

I'd consider taking it to the dealership to have it checked out but MPG isn't a guaranteed things so I doubt they could do anything about it.

Have a 2017 ES 300h and get a combined 37 mpg. On a highway trip will get 40 mpg. Took the car in for the 30,000 miles service and received a 2019 ES 300h. Left the parking lot and reset the mpg. These 57 miles were mostly highway but incredible for its size to be getting 47.7 mpg.

My second tank yielded me 45.9 mixed and hand calculated, average of 70MPH, love this car. Does anyone know if we have an RPM feature ?
