Default Rear door sheet metal

I don't know if anyone has noticed but the rear door sheet metal on the 2019 ES350 is folded along the outside of the door so that there is a lip running on the outside of the door. They haven't done that on the front door. Why wouldn't they hide the fold on the inside of the door?

Wife's Honda has no lip.the sheet metal is smooth. I looked at it more carefully and it looks like Lexus has perhaps epoxied some sort of clear protective plastic along the edge to prevent chipping?

Are you talking about either of these accessory options?

That's what it is. I didn't even know I had paid for it.

Yeah those stickers look tacky (no pun intended). they cost around $8 on ebay (and those are already a 5,000% markup) and dealer charges $145. I'm just careful how I open my doors and never have any issues. if you have kids who swing doors open though, it may be worth it for the back doors

The color matched edge guards look decent.

The doors on almost ALL passenger vehicles in the US and worldwide are manufactured using a process called roller hemming. This process takes the door inner and has the outer skin placed over it. The roller wheel then bends the outer edge of the metal over the door inner, creating a lip on the inside of the vehicle, and no visible marks to the outer surface.

Also roller hemming reduces rust on the doors. The rear quarter-panel is also vulnerable to rust through and has a thicker backing for the same reason.

Both wheel arches of the rear quarter panel are roller hemmed after the body of the vehicle is assembled to prevent rust and reduce movement/noise.
