Android Auto Update For 2019 ES
#46
This is not an update to Lexus offering android update to ES 2019 line-up. I discovered you can actually buy a small android box to connect through the USB to use Android and/or Android Auto and connect your phone. They do it through the Carplay connection, just do a search for Carplay AI box. It costs about $200.

I don't get why Lexus won't upgrade the 2019 ES with Android Auto. The 2019 and the 2020 have all of the same part numbers in the Navigation and Front Monitor displays. What am I missing?

I've never heard that. Can you produce a document that says that?
Lexus in Spain and Australia have been doing the upgrade on 2019s. My understanding is that it's a software upgrade. In fact, someone posted the step by step details in this forum a while back. My recollection is that it's very involved and there's a good chance you could brick your system if you don't get it right.

Early December 2019 I was going to buy a 2020 ES off the lot and knew it had android auto because it was in the brochure. Trying to get them to show me how the android auto worked it was determined the car did not have android auto even though it was a 2020 and only ES built after October 15 2019 production would have it. I told them I was willing to wait for the software update I had heard about and was told after they checked with top tech support at lexus that would not happen. Waited for a car with December build date to come in to be able to get android auto. One thing I noticed is that the other car had Verizon and this car is AT&T which makes me think their is a hardware difference. Also subscription end dates for all Enform had changed. If in fact is being put into overseas vehicles it is probably a license issue or something like that here. They really need to come out and tell everybody why it can be done elsewhere but not here. The android auto is a definite plus and I use it quite often.

IIRC the required time for the update according to Espana and Australia is one hour. This tells me that it cannot be very involved but probably just a software change. At this point all of this discussion is moot because it's quite obvious that Toyota will not be backtracking and installing AA in 2019's no matter how loud owners protest.

I'd prefer AA without any external addons - but of course having that is better than nothing. I also spotted a $600 replica screen that they sell which comes with android, carplay, 4G, navi, and is a touchscreen and compatible with original steering wheel controls, backup camera, and even have door sensor display etc. May consider swapping that in in the future.

They're doing the same rip-off thing to multiple Toyota vehicles in North America, apparently something to do with licensing agreement with Google. I wonder if it actually has something to do with licensing agreement with Apple to provide exclusive Carplay access (no android) to xx vehicles.
I go to Lexus's website and it states 2020 RC's are android compatible. Yet when I emailed them to ask why and when an update would be available, get the same canned response that there are no upgrade plans at this time...etc.
It's such an annoying thing honestly!
