Default Ay Yai Yai! My Beautiful Rims

For more than a decade, I had two brothers detail our cars right there in the driveway. Outside got a hand wash and wax, inside got the full leather treatment and the glass and gauges sparkled.

Well the brothers moved on to greener pastures. I went to a car wash that had recently opened, and I'd actually heard good things about how they clean and wipe down the car.

The car looked great, but as I walked over, I saw some white specks on the wheels. Pictured below, front wheel with five dings, and the rear with eleven. Welcome to my Sweet 16.

This is a great example of why I NEVER use a commercial car wash. Every time, in the past, many years ago, when I would try to use one I was sorry. Either damage, poor wash, streaks, windows still wet, and on and on. Even had one of the drying guys steal my change... In the winter here in Pennsylvania I use the DIY spray car wash in a stall and dry it myself. Feel sorry for you as I know you take really good care of your car...

I have the same rims and actually got scratches on the rear one too, have the shop fixed it but the color is not the same as original. I am so disappointed and not sure if they can fix it to get the right color again.

Whoa! That's the worst wheel damage from a car wash that I've ever seen... That's substantial and indicative of malfunctioning equipment.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel in that I had similar damage on a wheel on my 2013 that was ground smooth, buffed, painted and clear coated. The damage was invisible.

GOOD LUCK Lee...

Is that the one with the chain driven roller that pulls your car by it's wheels through what looks like train tracks. Yeah that's bad.

I'm a detailing snob but once in a while I cheat and go through the gas station car wash with the rotating rubber brushes (yeah i know car washes bad etc) but i do that if the car gets really dirty and i don't feel like dealing with it. plus the dog gets a kick out of the wash process. lol.

and strangely enough my ES has no scratches on it from the giant brushes.

I did used to go to a touchless car wash that blasts your car with high pressure water. don't really see many of those though. that's my ideal lazy man solution.

Ouch, that's pretty bad, sucks to hear. I've never heard any good stories from those kind of war wash places.. it's basically taking a brillo pad to your paint.

It's a new place with state of the art equipment. I line it up with the bottleneck rail, and it pulls your front wheel through. The machinery does a nice job. The personal detailing takes about 15 minutes per car. Also the abundance of flashing colored lights as you make your way through the tunnel, is impressive.

The owner of the place is due to call me today. I'll be pleasant and nice as long as his wash takes responsibility. More to come.

I give you credit for maintaining an even keel when I'd be completely losing my sheeyot. I hope the owner steps up and it turns out well for you.

Totally agree... Just check prices on those wheels but do it sitting down...

First bad sign is owner of car wash didn't call yesterday, so at 4 PM I drove over there. He apologized, and assured me he would take care of the damage.

Today, I'm going over to a well established rim repair shop to see what they can do and get an estimate.

Repair is likely $200-$250 a wheel so that guy just ate quite a few car washes. It probably happens more often but to people with not as nice of cars that won't bother to check or look at their wheels.

Yep, $400 for the two, overnight at their shop. With shop fees and tax $450. Got the check right here, car goes in tomorrow.

The owner told me they walked the entire machine and replaced a worn/broken roller for the wheels on the driver's side.

Hope they paint the color to match yours original color. Mine doesn't look at bad but color isn't match at all, so have to come back and see what they can do.
