Default The passenger airbag indicator light is always on?

Just picked up a 2022 ES350 and the bright orange light appears to be working correctly in terms of saying "on" when someone is sitting in the seat and "off" when someone is not but it is always illuminated if the car is turned on - essentially a part of your screen like a clock would be. It never goes off. Is this the way it is designed?

As designed.

Thanks - I posed the question to my salesman and his answer was "thats the way mine is." After having to bring my car back two days after picking it up (car was never programmed for seat memory) and asking their staff some general questions I had I feel much more comfortable with answers from this forum (really nice guys at dealership who try to help but nobody seems to know much about the cars they sell/service).

When the passenger seat is unoccupied, the air bag is disabled. That way, if there is a collision, the air bag won't deploy, which avoids adding another thing that needs to be repaired after the collision. And that is why that light is on. If the passenger seat is occupied, that light should go off, which means that the air bag is enabled to protect the passenger.

My point was the light is always on - I have never had a car before where the airbag status light was lit and never turned off. I understand why airbags are on or off I just was surprised the light never shuts off.

New to the club. 2019 ES 350

Did anyone confirm whether the light stays on all the time regardless of someone in the seat or not? Mine just recently came on full time. Before, it would only illuminate when there was something in the seat that was not safe for the airbag to deploy. It does show passenger airbag on when someone is in the seat, this was never the case before. Before the light was off when someone was in the seat which indicated it was engaged. Dealership says it is normal, I disagree since this just started.

I Purchased my preowned, certified Lexus ES 350 on September 12, 2023. I’m having the same issue (indications) on my dashboard regarding the airbag ON/OFF annunciator lights. I am not satisfied with any answers provided in this string and will have to dig more. In my opinion, these annunciator lights should not present themselves unless there’s an issue, as the system should be automatically working in the background, and only if a problem occurs, should AMBER annunciator draw your attention. This light is a distraction when in normal driving This tells me something is not in line with normal operation. Perhaps, if the air bag switch (not yet located) is intentionally positioned contrary to normal configuration, yes the annunciator light should present itself and stay that way until configured normally. Reading more on this, stay tuned…,,,

Mine behaves the same way. It’s a stupid decision by the manufacturer.

Yup. Like the message that tells you to drive safely every time you start the car. Big brother manufacturer "looking out" for the helpless, brainless consumer, I guess.

Completely agree. It's bad design to have an orange warning light glowing at you in normal circumstances. It makes you less likely to notice when a second orange light comes on to warn you of a real problem. Has lawyers' fingerprints all over it, IMO.

I have a 2022 ES350 UL and the warning light is on all the time (with or without a passenger). I too thought there was a problem, but I've asked three different people at the dealership and they've all said that's the way it's supposed to work. I agree with others that this is a stupid decision on Lexus' part, but so far, it's the only thing I have to complain about. Other than that, I love the car. I'm 66 and no longer feel the need to have a high-performance car. It has enough power to get me over the Colorado Rocky Mountains without being in the slow lane all the time and it's very comfortable to be in while I'm doing it. I look forward to driving it every day.

I think I understand the need to have an airbag indicator I just wish Lexus had put it somewhwere other than under the clock. It messes up the visual aesthetics of having an analog clock in an upscale car.

Second best tip you'll read for your interior car enjoyment:
Buy a sheet of peal and stick black velvet paper, cut it out neatly and cover that annoying and counterproductive light.

Best tip you'll ever read for your interior car enjoyment:
Use same sheet of paper and neatly cut two rectangles to cover the stupid fugly airbag warning on your sun visors!!

I hated seeing big orange death warnings ruining a work of art....

Fully explained on page 354 of owners manual which can be downloaded from the Internet. Seems like the easiest fix would be to make sure all the seat belts are locked if it bothers one that much!

You don't need to cover up those distracting warning labels on the visors.
I've covered them many times in past cars, but the visors in my 24 ES350 UL are covered in the headliner fabric. The application of a hair dryer releases the adhesive and the labels peel off in one piece pretty easily. (It gets too hot to handle, so either use gloves or needle nose pliers.) I removed both of mine in about 10 minutes.
