Default 2021 ES300h fuel economy


I know a lot of people like to turn up their nose at the hybrid ES with the eCVT, but when you have gone 230 miles on a 13 gallon tank and still have 390 miles of range, you can’t complain too much. Also I’m in Illinois where gas is $5.29. Buying the hybrid ES was the best decision.

Damn I'm jealous. My GS gets 15-18 city and 21-24 hwy and only takes premium lol

This is off-topic and being overly critical but I liked the fact that on my 2019 the screen with fuel range only displayed the range and not any other details like “After Refuel” but on my 2022 the view was like the one on your pictured view here. I was glad I was able to finally edit that screen on the 22 to display the “Fuel Range” only. Just my personal preference.

I agree as fuel prices increase those with hybrids and EV’s will likely be very proud of their decision to go that route.

I just took my 2022 ES 300h F Sport on some backroads to go hiking and I am thoroughly impressed at how the car handles even on its skinnier 235 tires. It's such a well planted car than handles the curves with ease. And I'm getting 41mpg overall, yeah that's a nice bonus.

I filled up 4 days with 405 miles on the ODO AND with a bit over 1/4 of a tank to spare, plus regular fuel only. That felt real nice.

Presumably you're not getting that kind of mileage at high speed driving. It's great dont get me wrong.

I try to keep it around 65mph on the freeway. Driving 80-85mph will always kill your efficiency. 😜

so you're getting 55mpg going 65mph on the highway? I find that hard to believe.

lol, well, my commute is 10 miles each way and part is interstate freeway and part city driving. I drive 65ish on the freeway and 45ish in the city. You can believe whatever you wish, though I have found gentle acceleration makes most of the difference, and I always focus on that.

You guys are getting insanely great MPG. Just to temper expectation that not everyone is in this exclusive club. My "After Refuel" is usually hover around 37MPG. If I drive like a turtle for a mile or two after refueI can get a couple more miles. I fall into more of a typical range:

My commute is 160 km (100 miles) daily. About 60% Highway 40% city.

I'm averaging 4.7 L/100km (50 MPG).

At $2.18 per Liter ($8.24 per US Gallon) gas, I love this cars ride and fuel economy. And I carry 4-5 people and stuff in the car regularly....

about 10 L/100km (23 MPG) on the Venza. The RX is a pig on gas. I average 11 L/100 km (21 MPG) on RX.

I'm averaging about 30 MPG on the 2021 RXh, but the 2019 ESh averages about 42, depending on prevailing temps and pretty normal driving styles. Our best tank in late summer was 46 mpg. I have never seen anywhere close to 50. My driving is mixed but mostly shorter trips of 35 to 55 mph. I probably don't have more than 20 miles of Interstate driving (75 mph) on average per tank, unless I'm on a road trip.

Just curious why the RX hybrid is so much lower? Is it size or something else?

I would say its a combination of things. Weight is certainly a factor, but then so is the V6 Internal Combustion Engine in the RX 450h. In my opinion, the RX hybrid design doesn't give up nearly as much "energy" as the ES hybrid. To this point, the combined horsepower of the RXh is actually higher than the standard RX 350, but that is not the case with the ESh which has lower combined horsepower numbers.

The RX is physically larger as well, so it probably has more wind resistance, costing it some in fuel economy.

The 2019 ESh is also the newer generation design and Toyota/Lexus made significant increases to the hybrid's fuel economy. For example, our 2015 ESh rarely achieved better than about 35 mpg with the older generation 2.5L ICE engine, but I generally exceed 40 mpg with this newer model.
