Changing synthetic oil every 5k miles is not only a waste of oil, but a waste of money as well. Synthetic doesn't deteriorate like dino oil and would probably be good for 15k UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Like a previous member asked about 95% city stop and go, then I might consider 7500 mile changes but never 5k... Total waste IMO... I know Corvette owners that put low miles on their cars and change oil every two years. Perfectly fine.

It's pretty obvious here there are people in this thread that buy extended warranty whenever offered for anything (for piece of mind), and people who don't have a good understanding of engines and engine oil. Changing before 5K miles is absurd and the 10K interval on modern engines and oil is beyond fine for 99%+ of the population.

If you want to waste time, money and resources, go ahead, if it makes you feel better just admit that, don't pretend to be doing something good for your engine because you're ultimately not. You are doing early oil changes for piece of mind, that's all, nothing to do with evidence or science or facts (e.g. laboratory oil analysis). Heck I've gone 4 years on an oil change on my old truck but I don't put too many miles on it, I only drive it when I need a truck otherwise it sits plugged into a battery tender. And it's got 250,000 km on it.

I've built and rebuilt a variety of engines, including ///M engines, including track engines. Oil can generally last long (I used to be part of the obnoxious "CHANGE UR OIL 15K BLACKSTONE SAYS ITS OK SEE?" club) so I know the drill. But honestly, especially on the 4-banger, oil changes are ridiculously cheap. Also hybrids are harder on oil since they run cold and wet due to how hybrids operate.

I buy Mobil 1 at Walmart for $24 for a 5 gallon jug and then get the $12 Mobil rebate all done on line upload photo of receipt and takes six weeks to receive.

In summary: You folks have not only helped me decide to skip the 5K, but I’m pretty sure I am going to do the 10K myself.
FYI: I too did the oil at 1000 miles and will be doing it every 5K/ 6 months.
My local Lexus Service Manager told be they do not use Toyota or Mobil 1 in the service department. They use drums that are not available with those two oils. He told me the brand sorry just can not remember. A brand that I had heard of but hardly a top brand like Pennzoil, Mobil, Castol etc. This is why I bring my Mobil 1 and Toyota filter to the service department and they charge me $30 labor for the oil change.

Read this post from the LC forum. Seems Mobil 1 may not be best for Toyota Lexus engines.

That has a lot to do with the oil you run. Our factory tune is very rich and depends heavily on the cats to clean it up. This also means there is more blowby from combustion than would be ideal resulting in fuel dilution of the oil. I have oil analysis to show this happens with Mobil 1 and it is what got me off the Mobil 1 for Lexus/Toyota engines ride I'd been on for many, many years. Every engine burns a little oil on every combustion cycle, even the best, most meticulously built and broken in engines burn a little oil. So your oil level not moving can only mean one thing - something is getting in the oil and keeping the level up. It might be fuel, it might be water (water sits in the bottom of the oil pan and is hard to remove without getting the oil very hot), it might be both, but I can say for sure an oil that manages fuel dilution better than Mobil 1 is what you want in your engine. It will continue to protect where an oil like Mobil 1 can't. I run Renewable Lubricants 5w-30 SHP PCMO in all my cars now (they're all Lexus/Toyota) for this reason. It's not the only oil capable of doing this, but it definitely makes a difference in my used oil analysis results which you can find for both my IS F and GS F in their respective forums in the Blackstone UOA threads.

Appreciate it but I'm not changing things up based on a single post from a car bro. (not you, the one who posted that post lol)

Lexus uses Mobil 1 as factory fill for the LF-A anyway. (I've been hammering this fact on BMW boards for close to 10 years)

And again I'm not using Mobil 1, personally, because "mObiL 1" but merely because it's actually the cheapest 0W-16 on the market. =) I'll switch to Walmart or Amazon brand immediately as soon as it's 1 cent cheaper.

The reason is today, all oils are beyond excellent. They're all within 0.05% of eachother in every measureable metric! (roughly)

I don't doubt it - I've often said it probably doesn't matter which you use as long as it's changed timely. My neighbor used to run Dodge Caravans in a fleet 300K+ miles using SuperTech every 3 or 4K. I just thought that post from the LC forum was interesting.
