Default 5000 Mile Dealer Service

After reading about some of you folks getting dings, dents, scratches when going to the dealership for service, I’m considering skipping the 5K service. (My dealership does a quick wash and detail when done) I wanted to get some input; I guess it will show in CarFax that I missed it but even the service guy I talked to at Lexus said they don’t really do anything. I’d appreciate hearing any pros/cons you folks have.

FYI: I do plan on having the free 10K service performed at Lexus.

If there is no oil change at 5K and you have no concerns, you are wasting your time.

I don't have that many miles on my new ES but on my wife's RAV4 Prime I just do the 10K miles or once a year oil change at the dealer otherwise the other 6 month intervals are just a money grab (here in Canada there are no free service visits in the first 2 years).

Wait, so they don't perform an oil change at 5k?

My 5k mile new 2013 ES came back wet from the car wash and oil change with a rip about 6" long in the driver's leather seat. I have been fortunate that my car(s) have no scratches or dents compliments of dealer staff. I try very hard not to use a dealer for anything... There have been previous posts on here where a member saw his car at a deli after dropping it off for service...

Not unless you want to pay for it. Complimentary first change is 10K. I do mine every 5 or 6k.

I think they check fluids, no oil change, I think it’s just an opportunity to try and sell me stuff, etc.. It’s a really waste of time and being a hour drive a waste of fuel these days…lol

Correct, per the service manual they check fluids at 5K ut do not change the oil until 10K. They do rotate the tires at the 5K service, however. At least they are supposed to. The guide also say there should be a road test, though I doubt that includes stopping for coffee or donuts.

I use the dealer for generally for one reason only....warranty work (although they did install the OE side window deflectors & I did get the 'LEXUS' badge for them to install to make the trunk lid more symmetrical....pics coming soon...

To be fair, this dealer did great work / service on my 2005 ES 330 back in the day & I was not disappointed with this visit. They are about a 25 to 30 minute drive away however.

I have a trusted mechanic we have dealt with for 15+ years now & he is the only one I trust to touch our vehicles.

The Complimentary 5K service includes the Tire Rotation, brake inspection, wiper inspection, check and adjust all fluids,
check installation of Driver's floor mat (remember the unintended acceleration debacle with Audi and Toyota?) and reset
the reminder. This is also the time to ask for Customization Settings to be carried out. Tends to be the time folks realize
what then don't know and ask for a Tech Tutoring session. Can be an important uncovering of a Recall or Campaign.
Club Lexus participants are not the target for this service visit but a great many Lexus owner's get the benefit.

Been advising most guests to plan these warranty paid visits at 6 and 12 months rather than the 5K and 10K interval because
many folks just don't drive like the old days. Short trips are actually harder on some components because they don't warm up.

It's just a tire rotation and top off of fluids the first 5k miles. Need the tires rotated for sure, but I'll be going in for the free breakfast mostly lol. There's a squeak by the CD player area, so maybe I'll have them add some felt to those contact points. I can DIY it, but just been too busy and lazy to go out and get material.

I think I’m just gonna do the 5K service, besides the oil changes just to get the tires rotated. After they wear out, I’m buying a new set through Discount Tire and letting them do the tire rotation, since it’s free for the life of the tires.

5,000, 15,000, 25,000 etc. scheduled maintenance is a tire rotation which they will charge you $250. Skip it.

I changed my oil at 800 miles, and again at 5,000 miles. 10k is coming up fairly soonish and I have one free dealer change. Debating it... but also really don't feel like the hassle and the concern that they scratched the car or overfilled/underfilled, didn't screw the filter on tight, or too tight etc.

I feel the same way. I heard some dealerships aren’t using Toyota / Mobil 1oil. I’m almost tempted to do the 10K myself as well. At least I will know what type oil was used and as of right this second my car is in pristine condition.

In summary: You folks have not only helped me decide to skip the 5K, but I’m pretty sure I am going to do the 10K myself.
FYI: I too did the oil at 1000 miles and will be doing it every 5K/ 6 months.

I think I got my Mobil 1 from Walmart for cheap. But not because it's Mobil 1, but because it's cheap. I'd also go with Walmart Supertech brand or Amazon brand if they offered 0W-16 Synthetic. Both of the latter have been proven to be extremely outstanding oils.
