Coin Box for Key Fob
I use the coin holder to left of steering wheel to keep my key fob in in my garage overnight. Mechanic said not to. Will wear out key fob battery as fob is emitting signal to engine whenever it’s within 20 feet of the car.
Must I give up this convenience to avoid paying the price of accelerated key fob battery replacement?

Here's what I do. Although I don't leave it in the car, but just inside my door at my house, I don't have to worry about any drain, tampering, or false starting by a car thief.

Leaving the key near or in the car will not only drain the fob battery, but it keeps the car's sensor active too. Not a great idea for a whole number of reasons.
"Leaving the device in the car, or even within the proximity communication range, may be detrimental. Quite often, the transmitter and receiver continue to communicate. This may keep the vehicle's controller area network bus and modules awake. That can kill the car's battery."

20 feet range
Wow, key keeps communicating with the car within 20 feet. Wonder if this is true only for Lexus or for other cars as well. I have always kept keys close to my Acura, and never had problems with a battery

I mentioned above about using a faraday bag like those I purchased over a year ago. I find that mine ( a Ticonn brand) is effective for blockage from normal entering and turning on the ignition to accessory. However, if I hold the whole pouch with the fob inside up next to the ignition-on button, and press the brake, the car will start. I don't know if it's that the pouch has lost its effectiveness or it was that way from the start as I didn't test it until now on starting (about 1 & 1/2 years after purchase). It could also be that the amount of battery power needed by the ignition switch to start is so small that even a slight leakage of power from the fob inside the bag is sufficient when almost touching the switch as this is the method to start when your fob battery is real low.
I suppose it's that way with all the pouches, but at least there is some blockage and probably no battery drain. But, heck, when any car is out in public, a tow truck can hijack it no matter what anti-theft you've got. Probably best bet is to drive an old beat up Yugo.
