So yesterday I took more of my car interior apart and found out you can, relatively easily, remove the hinged USB cover on the '22 models. (May also apply to '21??).
Remove the plastic piece below the CD player (start in the centre with a trim tool behind it to pop it loose), pop up the console trim top, remove the shift **** and it all comes apart. There is a screw holding the USB module in from the bottom, remove it. Then just use a small screwdriver to pry each end of the cover off. The cover will pop off, as will the spring. You can use pliers to pull out the silver rod that is at either end that held the cover on. Put it all back together.
Now I can keep my wireless CarPlay adapter under the lid, with the lid closed. You also need a stubby right angle USB cable, I think those were discussed in previous threads.
Great find. I've long wanted that damn door off, for the exact same reason. I even already have the right-angle cable -- it just doesn't do me any good yet. Thanks!
Give it a try! I have more pics if needed but there are other threads and videos on the matter so I didn't bother putting lots of pics in here. I wish I had done this sooner.
I have a 2022 ES and I am wrestling with the same issue of trying to go wireless. I bought a right angle USB cord from Amazon thinking it would allow the main cover to close with the usb cover removed but it was just a tad too bulky. So if you or anyone else have installed a cable that allow the main cover to close, please lat me know.. Thanks.
