Here's CR's survey rating from the April '22 issue on ES reliability.

Note the 2019 blip for Fuel System. A bad batch of fuel pumps hit this portion of the rating for numerous 2019 Toyota and Lexus models. Of course, that failure would show up early enough in the car's life to be covered under the regular factory warranty.

EDIT: Posted this and then just saw Aegean's post from this year just above it. Numbers are weirdly different, notably that fuel system.

Also the brakes get bad rep, only because of the pad shift noise which is common on Toyotas.

I drive 50-60K miles a year. Trade my cars in around 100-125K. The ES is very reliable. Besides regular maintenance, I have not experienced any mechanical failures.

So overall reliability went down from 2019 to 2022 huh, despite minor engine and trans rating going up for 2022? I don't really give these things much credibility.

I've often wondered: If, Heaven forbid, OP's car is totaled by accident, fire or flood in year 4 or 5 of warranty or anytime prior to its expiration, is there a refund of unearned premium, so to speak? I doubt it. Just another contingency for OP to mix into his decision making equation.

Most extended warranties are refundable on a prorated basis. Read the fine print.

I’ve had 2 recent Toyotas and one older Lexus go over 100k miles with absolutely zero problems other than the soft open coin tray in the LS430 opened roughly starting at 80k miles. One of the Toyotas was a 2014 Camry hybrid.

Anecdotal sure but I trust them mostly and haven’t gotten extended warranties. A random four figure repair is always possible though.

I had a BMW 5 and a Jag XJ8 and got the extension on both and used the warranty many times! The jag warranty cost around four grand and the car had close to ten grand of repairs over the years yikes. The BMWbhad a few issues but not many. Both were prorated when I sold the cars.

Currently toying with the used of getting a Porsche Panamera used CPO and definitely selling before the warranty runs out. You can get a lot of Porsche for sixty grand these days with 2 years warranty.

Most members will tell you to stash a little money each payday for a rainy day with the car. Not to enrich the dealer who makes big $$$ off X warranties. If no problems occur you take your favorite date on a trip or buy them a new Lexus.

but I have one question out of curiosity (as I have never bought any of these up front dealership provided warranties when car is new) - what happens if one crashes and totals your car say in year one? Will you get a refund of this $2700 payment?

When I posed this question, a responder told me to read the fine print. Pro rata refund. I’m skeptical until I see it writing. How ‘bout if one dies? Presumably transferable to the subsequent owner.
