Cool 5w-20 Gf-4 Oil Toyota Approved For All Lexi Engines March, 23 2006

So... I've been running mobil 1 5w-20 synthetic since january anyway. Good for me. Apparantly I missed that in March, Toyota put out a TSIB that approved 5w-20 GF-4 oils for use on most of the older engine blocks.
Which is fine for me. A couple horsepower, easier pumping, better cold starts, no downside. Everyone else should pimp it.

Like always. Mobil oil's put out phenominal stats on Toyota v6's (and ofhand, everything else).

Interesting. I've been running 5w-40 Shell Rotella T-Synthetic in my motor for the past 5k miles and love it except for the slight decrease in engine performance. The engine runs quieter and feels smoother, but that 40 weight sure does make her work to get up to speed.

Before that I was running Mobil 1 10w-30 but she ticked loud enough to keep tempo at a concert. I've heard Mobil is on the lighter end of 10w-30 oils which is why so many people have ticking issues after they use it. My concern with going with a 5w-20 is that it'll allow the cams and valves to be even harsher on each other. I know a little ticking is only natural, but I don't want people confusing my car with an old Merc diesel.

Also I occasionally run the engine a little hard, and SoCal traffic is like engine suicide (for some reason people around here like switching between flooring both pedals). A little better performance and improved gas mileage is definitely something I'd be interested in, but not at the expense of long term reliability. I'd like to avoid shelling out my life savings just so I can get my motor re-shimmed. If the lighter oil means that time comes sooner, then I'd rather spend a little more at the pump than spend a LOT more a few months down the line.

Your thoughts Phoenix?

I would like to see how good this 5W20 oil is in terms of shearing effects. That is why for a long time I was using Mobil 1 0W40, but now have used a 50/50 with Mobil 1 5W30 extended drain. At higher altitude I know my engine has to work harder.

Also would be interested to hear your comments on this Pheonix.

Cool

I doubt it'll shear.
5w-20 has been the only Toyota factory oil for Indiana since last year.
5w-30 is preffered on all the pre 5w-20 of the engines through any temperature on the 110*F scale. Yet on the engines that have already come factory with 5w-20 oil ('07 2az-fe), 5w-20 or 0w-20 are the specified preffered oil to that manual's 110*F scale. 5w-30 is not even mentioned as the preffered oil at any temperature range, simply that it is acceptable for use. Fear not.

If you're afraid, do like me. Mobil 1 synthetic. Heck, get the EP with 3x the uao's. That stuff will be in there for a good while! LoL!

Not many 5w-20 options out there right now, so most of it out there are the premium oils. Higher quality dino & synthetics. The Ford v8's here have been using 5w-20 for years. Some BMW's, Honda's, Daimler-Chrysler's, etc. Toyota's never first. I just like that most of the older engine's are cool with 5w-20.

I think, we should all run 5w-20, or atleast everybody give a premium 5w-20 a try.

I just use Mobil 1 10W-30 because sometimes it's cheaper than 5W-20 at Wal-mart.

I am going to take a peek when I stop by the Toyota dealer next time to see if they are stocking any 5W20 down here.

Thumbs up

I have been running Royal Purple's 10W-30 for some time now with no complaints. Engine runs smooth and strong. Perhaps I will try thier 5W-20 in my next oil change.

Pheonix, I am using mobil 1 5w30EP, if they made a 5w20 in the EP version, i would jump and grab it. After seeing UOA's after UOA's of mobil 1 5w20 with high wear numbers especially iron, lead, copper and aluminum, I am not sold on Mobil 1 regular oil especially after they started meeting the ILSAC GF-4 rating. The only decent UOA's that i have seen with regular mobil 1 is the 0w20. I think atleast for me, I am going to give redline 5w20 a chance next as i am a big fan of Moly, ZDDP and HTHS and redline exceeds all. Until i see consistent good UOA's on regular mobil 1, I am not going to touch that.....the EP version I love.

You should definately get a UOA done on your run with Royal Purple. Back in the day, it was one of the best oil but recently their quality, atleast through analysis has been subpar, please get a uoa done and see for yourself.
