Direct Wire Radar Detector 2001 ES300
#31
If GoodRevs has power to mirror in the 2001, that would be a solution. I don't know when Lexus started putting the dimming mirrors in the ES's. (My wife had an '02, and that car had dimming mirror, so they added it after '98 and in, or before '02.)

Well, I opened up the ceiling panel, and found that I did not solder the wiring for the radar detector. I did it in a way that is not to be considered the correct way.
When adding my mirror, I used the provided clamp-tap for the mirror's hot wire, and found a screw to use for the crimped-on ground terminal.
I'll post pics showing my crude, earlier install of my detector. (The better-done mirror wiring can be seen in the pics, too.)

Last pic.
NOTE - To remove panel from headliner, remove the 3 screws and slide panel towards rear of car. Front edge of panel will then come down first.
Again, I'm not proud of this wiring, but it worked for me.

Ayonne, Thanks for those pics. I just got my wire in today and hopefully will get out there to install it tomorrow. I'm thinking I'll splice into the power for the sunroof as I previously stated, but if it's much easier to access the line for the bulbs I may just go after than.

I only went to the bulb for the ground wire, but I should have put that wire onto the screw. Then I went to the moonroof Blue wire in the connector for the hot lead because that's switched on/off by the ignition.

I just finished up, the result is great IMO. I piggy backed onto the red wire that runs from the auto dimming mirror. Auto on/off when the car is started and turned off. I didn't even think of taking pictures while installing it due to being so focused (I'll have plenty of pictures up of our Lexus's as soon as we get our new RX though), but I did remember to take a picture of the end result. The quality isn't great but you get the idea.
