Arrived...2023 Model Y in Black
#451
Reached my destination in Southern Cal with no issues. Had to make two charging stops...the first one was 12 minutes, the second one 15 minutes. We took more time using the bathroom and snacking then charging! And this is why I l freaking love Tesla:
This was our first stop, about 2 and half hours from San Jose. There were a ton of 150 kW and 250 kW chargers, and they all work! We were in and out so quickly, spent a total of $38 for the 390 mile drive. The charging curve is pretty amazing, so charging is extremely fast, getting you the charge you need to get to your destination quickly

Especially if the facilities are nice, clean, has restrooms, and have convenience stuff to buy like food and drink.
Only exception I see is the peeps with unreasonable brand loyalty who think Tesla is the devil.
Those guys would probably rather push their car than stop there but they'll come around and get over it... eventually. Lolol.

These four chargers serve a heavily travelled corridor and are the last stop before Southern California. Imagine stopping here, and only two out four are working and there is a queue of cars waiting to charge....

For comparison, here is Electrify America's Bakersfield charging site just a few miles away, where half the chargers are usually offline

Two problems
1) chargers are too close to the road
2) there is a wall that blocks visibility of anyone laying in wait with bad intentions.

But take a right and you have lots of open fields in the middle of nowhere. That is not where I would want to get stuck at night

does it help some? sure, but i'd be surprised if it provides more than say 20% of the power used.

Compared to Tesla that installation looks like an afterthought do they care at all?

But, it' all gravy $$$ and might help pay for the equipment over time.
Disclaimer, I'm not a solar expert.

Since I got to spend about 7 hours driving, I want to make a few other noteworthy points.
Trunk space: We were able to fit three large suitcases, three backpacks, and other knick knacks with no issues. Not as much room as the Sienna, but it's not a Minivan
Overall comfort: Seats were really nice and comfortable. HVAC kept the cabin and back area nice and cool
Road feel and noise: The Model Y does a very good job of isolating road noise and handling bad pavement. There is some wind noise, but it's not bad
Power delivery: Very smooth, and power when you need it
Autopilot: Worked pretty flawless, detected when cars were in front or changing lanes in front of me

Don't quote me on this, but I heard (or read somewhere) the energy collected from the solar panels goes straight to battery storage. It's only used during peak times when the cost of energy is higher. Even if it's 20 percent of the delivered energy, that's pretty good. BTW, that area gets lots of sun all year round
