The Tesla Fremont plant is not just assembly, but also engineering, software development etc. It's a city in itself. It's so big, they have shuttle employees from some of the parking lots

Tesla is too bloated, and is not really within the vision of the company, where every process and interaction should automated and autonomous. Why would you need 140,000 employees? I would say Tesla should be able to comfortably run with 30,000 employees world wide.

A lot has changed in 5 years. Not enough to make that statement false, but too close for comfort

Maybe he is subscribing to the "getting rid of the bottom 10% every year" methodology.

Jack Welch / GE method didn't work well for GE, Boeing, or really any other company that used it

It's actually happening here in the Bay Area, many tech companies are turning to AI to handle jobs of multiple employees. The idea is it can do the work of 5 employees without taking a break or holiday. Very troubling to me. But I predict this is just a bubble, the same way in the early to mid 2000's when companies began outsourcing IT depts to India. One of my friends who was part of a 30 person IT team found himself the soul IT person left when his company outsourced their IT to IBM India. The problem....he ended up doing the work of 30 people, as how do you fix a server that's down (Or crashed) due to corrupt software or a failed hardware component from India? Or a laptop that won't boot up and needs to be rebuilt? He became their hands, getting calls from them sometimes at 3am. That experiment lasted about two years before it became unsustainable and he threatened to quit.

Of course factories can be automated, especially for repetitive tasks, but you still need skilled people, and I think we are all going to find that out pretty quickly

ceo's for public companies at least have 3 'bosses' - shareholders, customers, and employees. they generally have to favor 2 of those.

no ceo wants 'excess' employees though, it's always a tough balancing act.

the ceo's i hate are those who view employees as interchangeable parts and disposable. even in simiar or same roles people differ a lot, and people who have been with a company a while, although may become stagnant, still have valuable experience. and if they're stagnant it's often because of bad management either not inspiring them or pigeon-holing them or holding them back, etc.

Jack Welch hollowed out GE, took a ton of risky bets for short term shareholder gain, and left Immelt holding the bag. Not saying Immelt was a decent CEO, but he wasn't handed a healthy company

The nice version - https://www.npr.org/2022/06/01/11015...eak-capitalism

The not nice version - google behind the bastards podcast Jack Welch

If this blog is to be believed, it looks like the Reuters article was spot on about the $25k car...not that I actually doubted a news agency over Musk

https://electrek.co/2024/04/15/tesla...lon-musk-said/

According to sources familiar with the matter, Musk told Tesla’s team in Austin in December 2023 that NV9, an expansion of Gigafactory Texas for the new cheaper next-gen model, was a priority for 2024.

However, the project was recently completely defunded, and many people involved in it were laid off as part of the round of layoffs announced today.

Instead, Musk said that he wanted Tesla to focus on the south expansion of Gigafactory Texas, which is going to house a giant data center for the Robotaxi project.

According to people familiar with the project, it is already behind schedule, and there’s serious doubt that it can be completed by the end of August, which is the timeline Musk has been pushing for.

Of course random "news" agencies know more than the CEO makes sense.
