Just a marketing tool? That's ridiculous.

why the slam? name any 'marketing tool' that has a company that designed, built and launched a global satellite communications service and reliable re-usable rockets (this last alone is saving nasa and private industry billions). name a marketing tool that runs a bev company making and selling MILLIONS of vehicles. do all his ideas pan out? of course not, but that's not unusual among serial entrepreneurs, they try tons of things, and only a few become a big thing. oh and name a marketing tool that is making tech to restore limb sight and other functions to impaired/injured people. i'll wait...

Musk is a visionary, but he’s a visionary with no filter. If people like Walt Disney and Steve Jobs etc had Twitter and had the ability to speak unfiltered to the public, they would have sounded just as crazy and would have made the same amount of promises that couldn’t be delivered on.

I don’t like Musk as a person, I’ve said that, but the world needs people like him.

When I say marketing tool, I mean someone who's not really heavy into the actual tech creation, but the marketing hyberbole side.

Bill Gates and the like are innovators who actually created their stuff. Musk invests in his stuff. I admire them more, and their work have had vastly greater impact than Musk and BEVs.

Btw, a lot of his far-out ideas are from SF, including from Iain M. Banks, who I love too.

But he’s the visionary who made the technology happen, without him it wouldn’t happen or wouldn’t happen now.

As for Bill Gates having a bigger impact than Musk, I don’t think I agree. Musk has had a HUGE impact in the world of transportation, EVs would not be where they are today if it weren’t for him. And then even be side that, his work with Space X I don’t know that we would have a space program today in the US if it weren’t for him.

I don’t like Musk, but it would be foolish not to respect him and what he has done.

Not really. Bill Gates bought DOS. He didn't create it. Steve Jobs was ALL marketing. Steve Woz was the tech brains behind Apple.

Which is why i said and his like, and I do know about Jobs, another marketing guy.

Bill Gates and his ilk was an actual programmer who founded MSFT and actually worked on his stuff and got his hand dirty (at least at first), and helped usher in personal computing. The world would be nowhere like it is today without that time period and those people in history. Such people tend to not just have tech acumen, but in his case, very good business acumen. Musk has lotsa ideas gleaned from SF, but you can see right now his business acumen needs help, as he is erratic. He was not even a founder of Tesla. He was merely an early investor.

I just don’t understand how someone can look at the automotive landscape and say Elon Musk has had no impact, makes no sense to me.

So he made a good investment. Cool.

BEVs as a successful mass market product (initiated by Tesla and Musk, although BEVs have been with us since the 1800s) were coming sooner or later anyways due to climate change government intervention.

C'mon. He was more to Tesla than just an investor.

And he founded SpaceX and cofounded x.com.

People who have such visceral hate for Tesla and EV'S should probably not post here, or anywhere in the EV subforum. There is having a discussion, and there is just outright spewing venom. Better to just keep your blood pressure down and move on to Car Chat where you can spew as much anti EV misinformation as you want. Just my 2 cents
