I did not like Gates before, but his post-MSFT work to eradicate disease, alleviate poverty and hunger, and give health to millions around the world has made him someone to admire now.

He's given away around $50 billion to this end, and recently said he would give away most of the $108 billion he has left.

The way this is going, Tesla won't need a $25k econobox car

NBC: Tesla cuts U.S. prices on its Model Y, S and X vehicles after a difficult week
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/bus...eek-rcna148693

The Y is now around the price of a Prius Prime XSE if you add in the tax creds, and cheaper than the premium.

This is the whole point of Teslas dynamic pricing guys…this is why they are so hard for a legacy carmaker to compete with.

hahahaha...not to be insulting...but I'll need to add a lol to that.

Many Toyota cars are going for around MSRP or above and are still selling very well, thank you very much.

ps. I just talked to gen 5 Prius owner, and according to her, the Prime at the lot was at the $50k price point out the door, at least here in Central FL

i think tesla has screwed themselves in several ways:
  1. model 3: by bringing out the nicely refreshed 3 first because now anyone looking at that but wanting a Y won't want the Y until it's refreshed too
  2. trade-ins: given how reliable teslas are, i don't see people trading them in much unless there's a compelling reason (new 3 is a nice upgrade if one has a 3 today)
  3. buyer resistance: finding new buyers is probably becomng harder, as the mainstream 'consensus' is that hybrids are a more 'sensible' / 'safer' choice and the majority of car buyers can't charge at home or aren't satisfied with the range and charging speed / availability offered
  4. plain/aging design: competitor's cars are getting nicer and more stylish in and out while the model y retains it's "pretty as the inside of a cereal box" interior and funky exterior.
  5. musk: musk is clearly viewed very negatively by many people.
brighter spots:
  1. if they can continue to ramp cybertruck, that will bring in a lot of revenue and there's obviously demand there as it's a unique and new offering
  2. if consensus on fsd at some point is that it's reliable and useful, it could be a game changer for commuters who can then scroll tiktok instead lol
  3. opening the supercharger network to other brands may bring more profit but could bring resentment among tesla owners who arrive at 'their' charger network to see it full of fords, hyundais, rivians, etc., lol
other needs:
  1. much more public charging spots
  2. much more charging spots at apartment/condo places
  3. more range
  4. faster charging

The comparison doesn’t make sense. Toyota is not selling EVs. The EV market has clearly softened and Tesla has reduced prices, they are able to do that dynamically and then raise them back when demand dictates and it’s very hard for legacy carmakers to do that.

They sell way more Model 3 and Y Teslas than Priuses especially the Prime, it’s a totally different market, volume driven…

I would suggest asking all the Model 3 and Y owners here if they considered a Prius (I will save you time, they didn’t)

I’d also add that opening up SCs to other manufacturers is great for the EV market but bad for Tesla. As good as other EVs are, EA and other charging stations don’t have the scope or reliability of SCs and when that advantage is gone, other EVs become much more desirable

yes, i really don't know why tesla is doing this, unless there's a huge untapped profit potential. maybe it's the old crack baggy analogy... get 'em hooked and then raise the prices.

If I were going to road trip I’d happily pay the $14 or whatever per month to get access with preferred rates

And plenty of people would pay it all the time. That's a really nice chunk of incremental revenue with effectively no additional operating costs.

I welcome the price drop. I will trade-in the Y performance for a LR or maybe Model X if the price is good.
