If I were to buy a new Tesla today, I'd stop at Enhanced AP. I didn't use FSD on local streets because it was unreliable on the routes I normally took and roundabouts were not handled well.

i did that too for my first 21 M3P, for my new MS one I am waiting for it to start working good on HW4 for enhanced AP.
Yeah, that FSD being attached to the car instead of the driver is going to be problem going forward as he tries to get repeat customers. I'm sure that is the reasoning behind the subscription service, but I'm not sure about $200 a month. Gonna be a tough sale for most folks.
right now pricing for either sub or FSD doesnt make sense... also transfer in the future is hard, since all cars have all sensors so if people are just transfering all the time, nobody will at some point end up paying for the sensors.
I understand them wanting to give upgrade to all models, including base, cool idea.
Also in Europe, FSD is 7.5k (and it does not work yet), while in US it is $15k.... huge difference.
about fsd, transfer, etc., tesla should make it a subscription only. want it on the new car? fine, just carry on with the subscription.
if someone buying a used tesla that had fsd sub on it, they can get a sub if they want it,
this is exactly what microsoft, apple, amazon, google, etc., realized with software and services. fixed license prices doesn't really scale and has other complications. musk even gets it with twitter.

They offer it for $199/month, which I think is the only way that makes sense. I don't see any reason to pay $15k for it.

i know they have a subscription, but as you say, paying a fixed price for a service just adds complications as tesla is finding out.
this offer to transfer fsd to a new car though is just a way to boost q3 sales.
Not sure there's a story here (plus, if you read it, it's talking about the original Tesla Roadster). The actual issue is the focus on the range estimates, which most EV owners refer to as the GOM or Guessometer, rather than on efficiency and state of charge. If you know your SOC and you know your average miles per kWh over time you can drive and plan accordingly. Manufacturers often tweak range algorithms, we've had a couple of updates from Ford that specifically addressed distance to empty calculations since I got my Lightning. And of course, no one ever seems to remember that your mileage in your ICE cars is also an estimate and that your actual range may vary based on conditions and driving.
