Add Genesis to the list. I'm starting to lose count.

The problem with that is, we don't want hybrids either LOL.

Same thing will happen, but not as bad.

Why?

So you literally want the US government to try to take ICE cars away from owners to shove them into EVs? That would backfire even worse. Whew.

There is a ridiculously large amount of US citizens who are simply not interested in EVs and have no plans to buy one. That's a fact, I'm sorry guys.

Go to the crappy part of your town where the average income isnt close to 6 figures and count EVs.

They're NOT going anywhere and they have a place... in wealthy peoples' garages, which is fine and ideal bc they can home charge.

But no, I do not think we will ever reach 30% nationwide EVs. Even 20% is pushing it.

We'll see in a couple decades. I'll eat crow all day long if I'm wrong.

I'm against that. As long as the vehicle is in good operating condition and meets emissions standards for the year it was produced you should be able to own the car for as long as you want.

That's not true at all. The sole requirement was that it got 18mpg or less. Had nothing to do with age or emissions. Sure there were lots of crap cars, but there was a bunch of enthusiast cars that will be missed. Just a quick perusal of the list finds some real gems, many of which tend to cost a fortune today:

Aston Martin Volante
4 Audi Quattro Coupes and 5 GT Coupes
3 BMW 740iL protection packages
one each E30 M3 and E34
13 635CSi (the first production M car!)
Thousands of OBS K-Blazers and Tahoes
Several hundred El Caminos
Roughly 100 Corvettes
Several thousand Mustangs
over 100 Taurus SHOs
Tens of thousands of Cherokees
Several hundred Range Rovers
Several thousand Lexus, including every model
Maserati Quattroporte and a classic Biturbo with 18k miles and a manual transmission
Roughly 300 RX-7s and one 2005 RX-8
~150 Mercedes 190Es
a few dozen S500 and S600 coupes
five SL500s
C36 AMG
Roughly 100 Stealths and 3000GTs
Eight 300ZX
PAS/GMC Typhoon
20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am
5 Porsche 928 S
3 Roush Stage 3 F150s--MY2006!
Roughly 100 Subaru SVX
Several thousand 4Runners, including one MY2007!
About 500 Tacos
6 Supras, including at least one Mark IV twin turbo
17 Land Cruisers
20 Highlanders after MY2000

ANd if you can afford the payments, what about the poor man who needed a cheap house or car. Lol
You didn’t HAVE to trade in your car for Cash 4 Clunkers, it was a program that was available to you.

Who said take? It’s a program was completely voluntary. I owned a qualifying car at the time and I didn’t use the program because I didnt want my car destroyed. Nobody tried to make me lol

The math doesn’t support your conclusion. We will undoubtedly see most new cars sold being EVs at some point here in the next 10-20 years. That’s inevitable. When we’re talking about 40 years basically no cars that are currently on the road will be on the road, the average car in the US is 12 years old. When people go to buy new cars, a lot of them will buy EVs yes even people who say they won’t, because a lot of the good options will be EVs. So to say that 20-30% of the cars on the road in 40 years won’t be EVs makes no sense.

And like it or not if you guarantee a $7,000 trade in for any car if the owner buys an EV, people are going to trade cars in and buy EVs.

Listing all the cars that were destroyed may be sad for us, but each of those owners CHOSE to do that with their car because of the program. If your goal was to reduce the number of old, unsafe, inefficient cars out there then the Cash 4 Clunkers program was hugely successful.

I guess I'm not as smart as I thought I was . I sort of doubt people would have traded most of those for a Plug-in hybrid rebate. As I remember, my nephews rebate could only be used for a plug-in hybrid, he used it as a down payment for a plug-in Prius, which he still has today. Although he's never plugged it in even once since he's had it

They traded them in for $4,000 towards a fuel efficient vehicle. Why would they not trade them in for an EV or PHEV?

This was back around 2016-2017. I'll have to ask my nephew, but if I remember correctly, he got $8500 towards a Plug-in hybrid, this may have been a California thing. As far as your second question, there really was no decent BEV at that time, and I can't imagine someone with one of those vehicles going to something like a Leaf or Plugin Prius, although maybe some did

Yeah we're talking about different things. The national Cash for Clunkers program ran from July 1 to August 24, 2009. It collected and destroyed 677,081 cars in those seven weeks, and ruined the used car market for the better part of a decade.

If you look at what it set out to do though, boost the economy, replace old, inefficient cars with new safer and more efficient cars it was a huge success.

This was definitely a different program, it may have been a California only program. He could only use the rebate towards a plug-in hybrid. He didn't even get my Corolla until 2016

It affected poor people.

The program I mentioned yesterday is different from this one, if I remember it was limited to older cars from the 90's, but I'm verifying that with my nephew. I think it was a California program

Cost taxpayers $24,000 per car to buy and destroy them. Enormous waste of money.
