If you spend $10k on a battery pack and can get another 200k out of it, it's worth every single penny. If you spend $2k and get another 10 years out of your Prius, it's worth every single penny in my estimation

Maybe. Maybe not. We will see. Cheaper replacement batteries could alleviate some of that concern, but there is a reason the battery warranty is still around 8 years for most EVs. Time is the enemy. After that, you could end up with a huge expense that would likely be more than the cars worth. Or you could drive for another 5 years until the battery dies. If enough people have bad experiences, it will have an impact. 3 years old is the oldest I would even consider.
Nobody is saying there will be NO ICE cars, its just going to be much more limited while most cars are EVs.
Most people aren't car enthusiasts and a car is just transportation to them with some style and status thrown in.
If I were to buy a 12.5 year old car, honestly I would buy an EV and not worry about it. If the battery went bad and the cost to repair it was too great, I would sell it and buy another one. A 12 year old car would be totally disposable to me, ICE or EV.

I can tell you EV vs ICE would not play into my decision not to buy a 12.5 year old car.

But buying an EV with original batteries at 12 years is like buying a ticking time bomb, and this from someone who actually has owned an HEV (with a battery exponentially smaller than BEVs) for 15 years.
And as I'm actually being honest and not being a rah-rah fanboy, I can say I would NOT buy a used HEV at that age unless the battery has been replaced, much less a PHEV or BEV with much larger batteries.

If we're all being honest, we all know most people (and especially the people who don't frequent freaking Lexus forums and will def bat an eye at repair costs of $10k *rolls eyes*) would be fine with a 12 year old ICE car so long as it runs ok. It happens every single day.

I would not own or drive any 12 year old car...unless it was a fun garage queen that I just drove for fun...thats the truth.
People will buy old EVs when there are a bunch of old EVs around. These concerns will make them cheap and really attractive.

I don't get why people in this thread think the battery will just suddenly stop working completely when they age. Will it degrade? Certainly, but it's not like blowing an engine where it'll become completely inoperable. Even the OG Nissan Leaf which had a horrible air-cooled battery had rapid degradation but they still worked.

In any case I'll leave it at that, I don't want this thread derailed by us arguing back and forth... Powers that be have stepped in once so I don't want to push it.
