Pole Position
Another reason for cooling EV enthusiasm: Ezra Dyer in The New York Times writes:
Driving them is "boring". The anesthetic quiet and cleanliness of an electric car is "like a sensory deprivation chamber." For drivers, it's dull. Sure, some EVs can accelerate like a sports car, but they also "commodified and muffled that aspect of performance." It's missing the "analog mechanical brutality" of internal combustion that "activates some primal lobe deep in our brains, the one that catalyzes noise into adrenaline." Automakers lost sight of "the noises and nuances that make driving fun."

Seeing all the ICE cars gave me some lyrical inspiration.
Alright stop, collaborate and listen,
ICE is back with a brand new invention. Gas tank grabs a hold of me tightly,
Fueling up my ride daily and nightly.
I see those EVs rollin' on the highway, saving their owners cash in a smart, fly way.
Can't help but envy the money they're savin',while I'm here at the pump, sadly payin'.

Haha it's OK bro, there are lots of cars that can beat me . I'm sure my friends M4 Competition he's getting in a couple of weeks will give my Polestar a run for the money. Although it's the RWD version. He's over 500 HP compared to my 476, but I'll give it a try

Sometimes my brain acts like a caffeine-fueled squirrel (minus the caffeine), leaping from thought to thought without a net. My apologies, or you're welcome – depending on where I land!

EV ftw!!!
If you read the whole article, Ezra Dyer is far from anti EV and isn’t taking an anti-EV position. Quite the opposite in fact. But yes, in one part of the article he does lament the quiet power and competence of a typical EV and occasionally yearns for something a bit more visceral. But that’s not how he ends the article. And it sounds like the Ioniq 5 N would get him the best of both worlds.

So let me get this straight - the author is basically saying that one of the main reasons that the EV market is "cooling off" is because the vast majority of buyers that are emphatically not "enthusiasts" suddenly now care about traditional ICE traits - noise, gear changes etc??

You know what I find interesting is I posted a challenge a couple of weeks ago asking people to test drive some EV's, and if they found them not to be one of the most smoothest driving experiences, unacceptable, even boring etc, I would basically shut up. I even offered up my Model Y and Polestar to people who don't want to run out to a dealership or a Tesla showroom. Complete silence. It actually makes me quite sad

I would actually love to see the data on this, but here goes
Hyundai Motor Group shrunk its gap with Tesla by 33% over the past five years. While Tesla remains the undisputed king of EVs in the US market, Hyundai and Kia might be considered number two. The Asian company’s recent January to May 2024 EV sales hints that Hyundai and Kia are working hard to cement their place in the US electric vehicle market.
In 2020, Tesla’s gap with Hyundai and Kia combined was 73.2% between January and May. By 2022, the gap between Tesla and Hyundai Motor Group’s top US brands dropped to 52.9% in the first half of the year. Last year, Hyundai and Kia managed to close the gap between Tesla by 40.5% in H1 2023. In 2023, Hyundai and Kia combined sold the second-most EVs in the United States after Tesla.
Hyundai and Kia shares in the US EV market increased by 11.2% as of May 2024. As per the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA), between January and May 2024, Hyundai Motor Group’s top brands in the US sold 48,383 EVs out of 437,246 electric passenger cars in the United States.
Hyundai Motor of America reported that its EV sales increased by 42% last month, partly thanks to the IONIQ 5.
“We continue seeing great success in our eco-friendly lineup with an overall 50% increase year over year.
“Both EVs and Hybrids continue to gain popularity with Hyundai’s newest HEV, the 2024 Santa Fe, gaining 116% year over year and our award-winning IONIQ 5 family increasing 82%. We’re proud to also announce Hyundai has America’s Most Awarded EV Lineup in the industry,” said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
