Could have been worse. They could have revived the Probe name.

One of the drawbacks of owning a new car, especially an EV in good 'ol Cali

Good news in they let you write a portion of it off on your taxes. I guess it's not all bad?

Yep. It usually goes down year over year, but this year it went up . My Polestar and Model Y are similar. Thankfully my Sienna is only about $120.

They now talking about charging per mile driven. They want to drain every penny they can to pay for their mismanagement. We need the Governator back....

Ugh. I just renewed my Ody and it was $71.50. Are EV rates the similar to ICE? If not it seems like double dipping to get miles driven on top

They charge about $200 plus more for EV registration to try and make up for lost gas tax

CA: we rewarded the affluent to meet our green goals, and stiffed everyone else, hmm, maybe not the best plan.
CA: now we'll stiff the affluent as well.
Many affluent people: you had one job, we're moving east.

I have a few friends who moved "East", but came right back after one summer there 🤣

I do have to say though, sadly one of the most mismanaged states in the Union......

It really isn't. It's the 5th largest economy in the world with a GDP closing in on Japan and Germany, bigger than India, the UK, France and others. We don't have the highest state taxes, and we don't have the highest property taxes. The "California is failing" narrative is a partisan talking point and we certainly don't need any lessons from the states where leaders and politicians like to bash us - particularly because none of them have to manage the scope and scale of an economy the size of California.

But we have 12% state income tax, I can hear some say! Well, only if you earn $1.4m or more. We will gloss over, for now, the fact that people in general have no idea how brackets work. Or that most people are paying closer to 6%.

Our Bay Area home is maybe $3m or so in value. We pay about $10K in actual property tax, discounting things like garbage collection that gets billed as part of the property tax bill, because of Prop 13.

The majority of the gas taxes collected do actually go to roads, transport and related expenditure. It's a substantially, but not entirely, hypothecated tax.

So I'm not going to complain that DMV registration fees, where over half is passed on to the relevant county, city and caltrans along with a fifth going to CHP, are too high.

As much as I love living in Cali, and I wouldn't live anywhere else, it's a completely mismanaged state. Other than it's great universities, I kept my kids out of the horrible public schools here and spent a fortune on private schools. Have you been to Oakland or SF lately? Police in SJ where I live won't even come out to take theft reports. And what happened to that surplus we had a few years back? Let's not get into the homeless problem.....

Back to EV's. Just saw my first ever Semi near Tesla Fremont. Camera was in my pocket so couldn't get to it in time to take a pic. Looks awesome in person!
