my commute is 15mi. and i typically only do it 3 or 4 times a week. (rest wfh). i have a flexible boss you see... me

guessing a tankful of gas used to last me 2-3 weeks before, and was $40-60. so est. $80 a month maybe.

my electricity here has no peak / off-peak rates. looking at a recent bill, it appears to be 14c / kwh.

Not sure where I got 50 miles. So you are probably using about 6 to 7 kWh per day on days you commute. Your bill is going to be really low especially at 14 cents. Unfortunately we are stuck with PG&E, which is a pos monopoly

Not really. Unless you're shopping very soon, by the time you're in the market for your next car, nearly all of your EV options will be NACS....

so the electrician called and i happened to be home so he came by to scope out the charger install to get his quote to me.
no idea when it might get done because obviously i have to have the charger first, plus his scheduling.
but it's forward progress...

We just got a notice last month from PG&E that they are raising our rates

Thank goodness I have Solar, or I would be at the mercy of this incompetent company

there's talk about San Jose ditching PG&E and setting up their own power company. The proposal passed a couple of weeks ago to get the exploratory work underway. Talk is up to 25% reductions, but a while away. And even at 25% savings, we're still paying way more than most. But anything to get away from PG&E welcome. Absolutely appalling business.

there's quite the irony in your statement. home solar has CAUSED power company revenue to fall and thus they have to raise rates to fund grid maintenance, etc.

much in the same way as the state quickly realized that ev's pay no gas tax and so must be charged more for registration to fund road maintenance.

In this specific case, it's not just the solar transition, it's at least as much and likely much more PG&E management incompetence and actual negligence leading to huge damages claims over the years that we're basically now paying for though inflated rates.

much blame to go around... mismanagement of forests causing more fires. fires causing grid damage. storms bringing down power lines that start fires. lawsuits all over costing a fortune...

Please. I give PG&E free electricity every month and they sell it to others at retail. I made the capital investment.
Any they continue to burn down our forests and blow up our cities.

not necessarily. remember some of the “solar homes” produce more electricity than they consume. that surplus goes back to the grid

doesn't the power company pay customers for the solar power sent to the grid? and they likely pay out less than they would get selling it, plus transmission losses.

They pay pennies and sell it back for retail rates. Plus they charge us $11 a month grid fees
