Nothing. Our testing consists of plugging into the OBD port and asking the car if it works. As long as there's no CEL and you haven't done something silly like tune out the cats, it will pass.

And if you're outside of the greater Chicago metro, there's no testing at all. There are literally zero testing stations more than 58 miles from Downtown, and you can drive as far as 375 miles from the city and still be within the state.

You probably know already, here in California they are strict, they do a full visual inspection, checking air intakes, DP, etc and look under the car, and put a device in the tailpipe measuring emissions. When I put in an F-Sport intake on my IS-350, I had to make sure they sent me the CARB sticker to put under the hood. If you have a tune and they find out, they won't pass you.

Thank goodness except for my Sienna every two years, no more smog checks

New Tesla Model 3 Performance achieves 10.92s quarter-mile on regular roads

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. The reengineered Tesla Model 3 Performance is vastly underrated. With customers now taking delivery of the top-tier all-electric midsize sedan, some drivers are now realizing that the new Model 3 Performance is not just a simple update to its predecessor — it’s practically a mini-Plaid Tesla.

The new Model 3 Performance was launched with very little fanfare. Specs-wise, the reengineered Tesla Model 3 Performance seemed like a good step change from its predecessor. As could be seen on Tesla’s Official website, the new Model 3 Performance is listed with a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds, a top speed of 163 mph, and 303 miles of EPA-estimated range.

Now, Tesla’s performance vehicles are always quick off the line, but some cars like the Model S Plaid, which is listed with a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds, could only achieve their optimum acceleration under ideal conditions. On a regular road with zero preparation, the Model S Plaid is still a frighteningly-quick car, perhaps just not 0-60 mph in 1.99-seconds quick.

This does not seem to be the case with the new Model 3 Performance. As as shared in a video that was recently posted on X and YouTube, a new Tesla Model 3 Performance completed a quarter mile run in 10.92 seconds at 124.14 mph. During the run, which was conducted on a regular road with the vehicle’s air-conditioning turned on, the new Model 3 Performance was able to achieve a 0 to 60 in 2.93 seconds.

Such performance is extremely impressive, especially considering that the Model 3 Performance can achieve such feats straight out of the factory. The fact that the vehicle costs just $54,990 before incentives ($42,490 with the federal tax credit) is just icing on the cake. At such a price, after all, drivers will be hard-pressed to find another vehicle that could offer the same performance and technology as the Model 3’s top-tier variant.

Watch the new Tesla Model 3 Performance achieve a sub-11-second quarter-mile in the video above

Going back to the Supercharged Mustang, let's pretend that it's street legal in California, and I can get it for $50k, the new Model 3 Performance is 1000 times a better value for the following reasons:

Practicality. I've rented a Mustang GT about four or five times while in San Antonio. It's back seats are a joke. If there were more than two of us going for lunch, we took someone else's car, no way a 6' Texan would fit back there. If I remember, trunk was not very spacious. Model 3 Performance on the other hand has decent space, as well as decent trunk and frunk space.

Efficiency. I admit, I was a bit hard on the throttle, but I was averaging probably no better than 18 MPG. Gas was pretty cheap in Texas and it was on the company's dime, but in 4 days I had to make two trips to the gas station. Plus it uses premium, and regular is already sky high here in Cali. The Model 3 Performance on the other hand is extremely efficient, maybe costing no more than $50 a month in electricity.

Maint. I had a coworker who owned a 2017, and it was a maint nightmare. Now you are adding the complexity and overhead of a supercharger, which needs additional engine and oil cooling. The Model 3 P on the other hand is practically maint free, it's biggest expense over its lifetime will be tires.

Performance. 0 to 60 both cars are very close to each other, I'm pretty sure the Model 3 P has a slight edge here. And they are not that far off when it comes to the 1/4 mile. I don't plan to track the car, so quarter mile is not really that important to me.

All in all, the Mustang with Performance package is for someone who will tracking their car, I'm pretty sure they won't be daily driving it, making this an overall impractical car. The new Model 3 P on the other hand is practical, fun, efficient, and FAST for the times you want to want to wipe the smirk off of that M3 driver next to you 🤣

Maryland is the same way and is self service too. I put a catless midpipe in my GTR and it still passes emissions no problem. When I had my MKIV Supra I had no cats at all and it still passed emissions every time and at that time they had visual inspections with a mirror and a sensor on the tailpipe and it still passed. These cars run pretty clean.

In California if you're gas cap is missing, cracked, or not sealing properly they won't pass you

Here's the plan with the Model 3P. I've decided to give my son the Sienna, and he agreed to take it. In August he will be attending UC Berkeley and will be living about 5 minutes from the campus, so he will take the Sienna when he moves out, which will most likely be for the next two years. In January I'll be returning the Polestar, and I'll be switching to and driving the Model Y. In June of next year my wife's Ioniq 5 will be going off lease, and at that time I will be returning it and buying the Model 3 Performance and giving my wife the Model Y, which also will remain the family/trip car.

I think this is a win-win, as I reduce the number of cars I have by one, will only need to buy 1 new car instead of 2 (which will reduce my insurance and registration costs), my son gets the hand me down car and we keep it in the family! Sure it has almost 170k on it, but it still has a lot of life left in it. I still trust it enough to take it on trips. I would say we will easily get 250k out it before it starts giving us issues

Haha bringing back memories 🤣. Especially of Phoebe Cates, who was freaking hot in those days!

My son's pretty trustworthy, he's already 19, and pretty much buries himself in his studies. If he was going to do anything bad, it would have happened already
