The article reports that only 4-5 EV drivers stop by per day. There are a total of four charging stations and an "automated convenience store with complementary coffee, water, and restrooms".

My Dad looked into purchasing a gas station once and learned they only make a dime, or less, on the sale of a gallon of gas. Most of the revenue is from snacks and drinks, so maybe that is how this EV charging station is still profitable.

Pretty novel idea for this owner to be one of the first. I hope it works out for him

Nooo lol. None of those places are ANYTHING like Takoma Park, not even close. Theres not another locality in the DC region thats like Takoma Park.

Well, having lived in this area for more than a half-century, I still think you are exaggerating it some....not that Takoma Park isn't the way it is (what you said about that part is indeed true)...but that it is much different from those other very close-in suburbs. I've seen them all.....and the ones I've listed above are all pretty close. But, I respect your opinion..... I know you work wth clients buying homes all over this area.

I've lived here my whole life and I'm in the real estate business here, I'm not exaggerating. Also when was the last time you were in Takoma Park? I was there yesterday. There isnt any other place here thats on the same level as Takoma Park in this way.

I wonder how this will pan out in the future. At any business the owner has to pay rent/mortgage on the property, property taxes, permits, fees, cost of construction, equipment, staff salaries, bills, etc. With regular gas stations, they may not be making a high margin on the gas, but they have a fast turn around of cars fueling up in few minutes, and also a lot of these customers are coming into the store to buy snacks and beverages that are sold at a high profit margin. With EV charging stations you still have much the same bills to cover, but then you have a single car sitting there for hours on end buying $20 worth of electricity. Maybe the driver will come to the store and buy a soy latte, but with low turn around its hardly worth it.

Doesn't seem like EV charging stations can be viable businesses without additional government subsidies.

Wow that's pathetic. Con Ed's system delivers little charging power at enormous timed rates. Not sure it could be any worse.

I don't quite follow, Steve. Money isn't everything, but as a business how do they expect to stay in business?

They are, but from government handouts vs actual business earnings.

The answer to both questions is the same lol. Its the Maryland "feel good" waste of money. They're getting a bunch of government subsidies and grants, and I'm sure a ton of money from the City of Takoma Park (I discussed the taxes earlier in the thread). These are liberal green SJW types, they probably have other jobs and such, and this is a side thing they do for the reasons I mentioned before.
